Charlene was born in Red Bank, NJ to Charles S. Hopla and Irene T. Hopla. She was also known by her nicknames of “Ahmee” by her sisters when they were very young, and “Jelly Bean” by her sister Donna.
After graduating from high school Charlene met Percy Sundstrom, whom she married a little more than a year later. They were a loving and devoted couple for over 58 years. Soon after they married, Charlene graduated from the Charles E. Gregory School of Nursing.
Charlene loved corresponding with relatives and friends, sending many cards and letters. Similarly she enjoyed being a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church’s prayer circle. What brought her the most joy later in life were family gatherings and being a grandma. Charlene was a very dedicated daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandma.
She is survived by her sisters; Donna and Debbie, sons; Erik and Todd, beloved grandchildren; Bryce and Alexa. Of note, she passed away in her home with her daughter-in-law Crystal Sundstrom by her side.
In lieu of flowers, any generosity on Charlene’s behalf can kindly be extended to St. Paul United Methodist Church in New Ellenton, SC.
Charlene will be deeply missed by her loving family and close friends.
The family will receive friends Friday morning, September 12th beginning at 10 o’clock in the Family Life Center of St. Paul United Methodist Church in New Ellenton.
The funeral service will follow at 11 o’clock with The Rev. Ray Camp officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
