Charles Thomas "Tom" Barnes, age 78, passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord after a life of faithful service on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, following complications from surgery. He has heard the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" (Matt. 25:21) He was an active member and Deacon of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church where he also served as convener of the Covenant Class. Tom was born in Nashville, TN and attended West High School, going on to receive his B.S. from the University of Tennessee before becoming a Certified Public Accountant. He spent his career in corporate finance for many companies including Watson's, Goody's and West Chevrolet, and he managed West Properties at the time of his death. Tom met his wife of 54 years, Pattye, in Nashville, eventually moving to Memphis and then to East Tennessee in 1979. He loved all things Volunteer and spent much of his time giving back his beloved school, serving on the Board of Governors and Alumni Council, and as President of the National Alumni Association from 1983-84. He also served as Class Administrator in Bible Study Fellowship and was a member of the Promisekeepers Bible Study for many years. Tom loved college sports and traveled to many college stadiums with his friends on their annual trips. Tom will be remembered for his independent spirit and sacrificial love for his family, friends, and his Lord Jesus Christ. He faced many challenges from his childhood throughout life with fortitude and had the ability to solve any problem. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Nell Barnes, sister Juanita Barnes, and brother Bill Barnes. He is survived by his wife Pattye Barnes, daughter and son-in-law Mary Beth and Bill Maddox of Knoxville, son and daughter-in-law Tommy and Heather Barnes of Chicago, grandchildren Will and Anna Carlton Maddox and Kate and Jack Barnes, and sister Janie Boles. In addition to his family, Tom was loved by many dear friends, several of whom held his hands in his final moments here. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church Sanctuary on November 7, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the service. A private interment will be held at Cedar Springs Cemetery.
