Charles W. Black, Sr., of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at The Valley Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on December 10, 1935, in Mecklenburg County, Charles was the son of the late Hugh Grady Black and Nellie Jane Beaty Black. He was the eleventh of twelve children and the last of his siblings to pass.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Charles honorably served during the Korean War. Following his military service, he enjoyed a long and dedicated career with Ruth Salad, retiring after 39 years as a route salesman.
Charles was a devoted member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he faithfully served as a Deacon, Elder, and member of the Green Team. He also enjoyed fellowship and friendly competition as a pitcher on the church softball team.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend - a man whose kindness, humor, and strength of character touched the lives of all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Frances M. Black, and his eleven siblings: Grady Black, J. Harvey Black, John Black, Jim Black, Thomas M. Black, W. Clifford Black, Margaret E. Boyd, Mittie L. Black, Nell J. Adkins, Kathleen A. Small, and Frankie H. Beaty.
Charles is survived by his son, Charles W. Black, Jr. and wife Lori; daughter, Sherry E. Black; grandchildren, Melissa Haynes and husband Jason, and Charles A. Black; great-grandchildren, Nick Haynes and Allison Haynes; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall. A private family burial will be held at Cumberland Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, Building Fund, 2505 Village Dr, Fayetteville, NC 28304
