Charles Bowery Obituary

Published by Vincent Funeral Home - Providence Forge from Nov. 18 to Nov. 19, 2008.
BOWERY, Charles Ryland Sr. "Buddy," 78, of Quinton, Va., passed away November 17, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Emma Kirby Bowery; one son, Lt. Col. Charles R. Bowery Jr. (Mary Ann), U.S. Army, stationed in Germany; one daughter, Leighann Bowery of Chesterfield, Va.; two stepdaughters, Cathy Theimer Davis (Vin) of Eltham, Va., Susan Theimer Thomas Bergerard (Jean-Claude) of Quinton, Va. He is also survived by three brothers, Raymond A. Bowery (Jane) of Lawrenceville, Ga., Cecil F. Bowery (Bonnie) of Quinton, Va., and Leon B. Bowery (Gerry) of Charles City, Va.; one sister, Phylis Bowery Butler of Quinton, Va.; four grandchildren, Brian Davis (Johanna) of Eltham, Va., Amy Davis Dixon (Jed) of Manteo, N.C., Everette Thomas (Colleen) of Marshall, Va., and Jessica Thomas Morris (Ian) of Fredericksburg, Va.; and four great-grandchildren. Buddy served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and retired from the City of Richmond Fire Department after 25 years of service. He loved his farm and working the land, raising cows (especially Black Angus), and recently boarding horses. In his later years, he decided to learn to fly. Buddy kept his plane at the farm and could be seen taking off and landing from his self-made pasture landing strip, scattering cows as he took off and landed. He was an avid reader, and found delight in discovering new things daily. Buddy was a friend and willing listener to everyone, and was ready to help in any situation. Not only did Buddy love his Lord, but also his family, his farm, and life in his homeland of Quinton. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Vincent Funeral Home, 9923 Pocahontas Trail, Providence Forge, Va. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, also at the funeral home, with the burial following in Emmaus Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Bon Secours Hospice, 8580 Magellan Parkway, Richmond, Va. 23227, or Emmaus Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 533, Quinton, Va. 23141.

Dear Emma and family. Please accept our deeptest sympathy in Buddies passing. He was such a kind, giving and gentle person who's spirit continues on in the lives of you and his wonderful family. Link and I are so fortunate to have known him and felt the great love he shared with us as we were welcomed into the family. Both of you are such wonderful examples of God's love! May He give you comfort in the day's ahead and know that our love and prayers are with you, Cathy, Charles and Mary Ann.
Love,

Crys Gaston

Dear Emma,
It's always sad to hear about someone we care about passing from this world to the next as we were when we heard about your beloved Buddy. But somehow it has bigger implications when that someone was a pillar of our community such as Buddy Bowery was. I can recall him speaking at church with such authority, speaking to children with kindness and a sense of fun and it seems there was no one who did not know him. There is no doubt he is someone who will be missed far and wide. We are thinking of you.

Emma, I am truly saddened at your and family's loss. My memories with Buddy are distant but still to this day talked about and cherished. I enjoyed coming to the 'country' as a kid.I truly believe great people go on to greater things after they leave us and Buddy certainly qualifies! Seeing all of you brings back wonderful experiences.

To the Bowery Family-
My deepest sympathies on hearing the news of Buddy's passing. I first met him when I took a job at the New Kent County Airport. To me, Buddy personified a true southern gentleman. He was so kind and friendly, but rather quiet. I don't believe he had to say much because it was just the fact that being in his company was enough. For that alone, we will miss him. Please accept my condolences on your loss.

What gratitude and affection we feel for Mr. Bowery as we remember with sweet pleasure the many Christmases when we drove slowly along Henpeck Road marveling at his "light fantasy" and our children squealing their approval. We will always appreciate him as we think back to the springs when he welcomed our children (and me) over to greet the tiny lambs or goats or whatever other little creatures that had been birthed that year. Thank you, Buddy. Betsy and Dennis Mountcastle

Although I never remember meeting him my grandparents and father talked of him and his family. Which made it seem like he was a very well liked and loved person, whom I wish I could of met in person.
