Charles F. Burnside

Charles F. "Charlie" Burnside, President of Maple Donuts, Inc., age 78, of York, passed away on April 4, 2024 at his home. He was the loving husband of Susan M. (Steckler) Burnside; together they shared 62 years of marriage.
Charlie was born in Oakland, CA on July 11, 1945 and was the son of the late Charles O. and Josephine (Shortino) Burnside. He attended York Catholic High School and York High School and served the York County community as a successful and dedicated entrepreneur, business owner, and philanthropist. Charlie proudly owned and operated Maple Donuts, Inc., a national wholesale baking company that employed over 400 employees across two plants in Pennsylvania. His success with Maple Donuts, Inc. made him legendary in the bakery business both locally and nationally.
Charlie was also a successful restaurateur in York County, owning and operating Jolly Coppersmith Restaurant, Fat Daddy's Restaurant and Night Club, and Charlie & Johnny's Restaurant. In addition to Maple Donuts, Inc. and his restaurants, he also owned American Pay Telephone Company and Programed Maintenance Janitorial Service. Charlie's dedication and hard work spanned far beyond his business ventures and allowed him to serve as the former President of the Southern Pennsylvania Restaurant Association, York Jaycees, York Quarterback Club, York Jaguar Club and also as the former Vice President of the York Area Chamber of Commerce, Pennsylvania Jaycees, Pennsylvania Division of the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Agency, Pennsylvania Bakers Association, and Philadelphia Bakers Association.
Charlie will also be remembered for his longtime philanthropic support of York Catholic High School and as a respected leader of many social and business clubs across York County. In his personal time, Charlie enjoyed racquetball, thoroughbred horse racing and breeding, and traveling, having traveled the world with his wife and family.
In addition to his loving and devoted wife Susan, Charlie is survived by his sons Damian Burnside and wife Stacie Burnside of York, PA, Nathaniel Burnside of Erie, PA, and Christopher Burnside and wife Mary Anne Burnside of York, PA; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his brother Frank Burnside of Lancaster, PA. Charlie will also be deeply missed by many wonderful friends, colleagues, and community members and he will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services and interment will be held privately by the Burnside Family under the direction of Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., of East York.
