Charles Donald "Don" Carpenter, 81, of Bessemer City, died Monday, March 16, 2015 at Peak Resources, Gastonia. He was born June 17, 1933 to the late R. Gordon and Lula Strutt Carpenter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his, infant brother, R.G. Carpenter, Jr., brothers, Marion Leon Carpenter, Lewis Henry Carpenter and sister Linda C. Splawn. Don is survived by his wife, Joyce Lee Carpenter of 62 years, daughter, Katherine C. Hovis and husband Ed of Gastonia; son, John Alan Carpenter and wife Liz of Bessemer City; four grandchildren, Amanda C. Grooms and husband Mitch of Bessemer City, William Kyle Hovis and fiancée Rebecca Gyi of Greensboro, Joseph Alan Carpenter and wife Lindsay of Bessemer City, Charles Richard Hovis of Greensboro; four great-grandchildren, Kailey Ann Grooms, Tyler Glenn Grooms, Iris Elizabeth Carpenter and Jasper Alan Carpenter. Don was a graduate of Bessemer City High School class of 1951 and served in the United States Navy from 1951-1954 during the Korean War. He was a retired Building Contractor for more than 35 years. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 19, 2015 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Sisk-Butler Funeral & Cremation Services, Bessemer City. His funeral services will be held at First Wesleyan Church, Bessemer City, at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 20, 2015 with the Rev. Wes Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia with military honors performed by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to First Wesleyan Church, PO Box 682 Bessemer City, NC 28016.
