Charles Conner Obituary

Published by Chandler Funeral Homes & Crematory - Wilmington on Aug. 23, 2015.
On August 23, Chuck Conner passed over to a larger life. Chuck was born in the mountains of Kentucky and raised on a farm in Indiana. A talented athlete, he played both baseball and basketball and attended the University of Indiana where he graduated with a degree in Business. He was known to say that both "he and Abraham Lincoln were born in Kentucky, schooled in Indiana and lived in Illinois." Chuck married his sweetheart, Phyllis Rae Scrivner, on September 4, 1954 and moved to Chicago. In 1958, fate found them a permanent and welcoming home in Arden, Delaware. Chuck and Phyllis designed and built their amazing Ardencroft home in 1963 where they spent over 50 years creating a haven of beauty, with their well groomed yards, magnificent garden beds, numerous bird feeders and a small pond that was a favorite stopping point for neighborhood children. Chuck had a very successful, 50 year career with the Travelers Insurance Company, where he earned virtually every award the industry had to offer. He served many years on the Arden Council, The Rotary Club of Wilmington, and was heavily involved in the Episcopal Church, as well as a Vestry leader for St. David's for decades. He was a man of strong faith and integrity, a loving husband, a devoted father, cherished grandfather, and a well-respected civic leader in the Arden community. Chuck was predeceased by his son Charles Daniel "Dan" Conner on the same day in August 2002. We believe that Dan greeted Chuck with open arms and they now reside together once again. Chuck is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Phyllis Scrivner, his son Michael Ray Conner of Santa Barbara and his two daughters, Grace and Angela, his daughter Kay Conner Miller, her husband, Hodge, and their two sons Will and Conner (Chuck's namesake) of Washington, VA. Services will be held at The St David's Episcopal Church, 2320 Grubb Rd. Wilmington, DE on Monday, September 7 at 11:00 am. A memorial gathering will follow the service at the Arden Gild Hall on The Highway Arden, Delaware. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Arden Gild Hall Restoration Fund 2126 The Highway Arden, DE 19810, the Arden Memorial Garden fund 2119 The Highway Arden, DE 19810 or a charity of your choice in Chuck's honor.

The Conner family holds a special place in our hearts. When my dad died, Chuck and Phyllis invited the entire family down just to get a chance to relax, unwind, and reminisce. It meant so much to us. And it was typical of their empathy and their wonderful neighborliness.

Chuck's calm, reassuring, and folksy presence became a signature of the Arden Fair for decades. Hearing "Oh What A Beautiful Mornin'" at the Arden Fair has now taken on a permanent special place in our hearts. We'll always think of Chuck.

Our sincerest sympathies to one of the finest families we've been fortunate to call neighbors.

Phyllis, Molly had called me about Chuck. I am so very, very sorry for your great loss. I remember what a handsome young man he was when at Berea. If you ever come to Berea it would be nice to see you. Barbara "Byrd" Power

"Mr Conner" was one of many Arden dad's looking over us Hannover girls. He always seemed like a gentle giant to me. Wishing him safe passages with Dan. My warmest thoughts and love go out to Phyllis ("Mrs Conner"), Kay, Mike and all the grandchildren.

I was Chuck and Phyllis's neighbor for nearly 40 years. It was great coming home up our shared drive-way to find Chuck at the mailbox or getting his paper, where we could talk for a while. He watched my daughters grow up,as I watched his children become adults. I was always welcomed as a visitor. Dinners,a glass of wine, having my grandchildren feed his fish in the yard....all wonderful memories. My lawn could never be as trimmed as his,so I never tried. Of all the people who lived in the Ardens, I couldn't have asked for a better neighbor.
