Charles Robert Evarts, 79, was called home to be with the Lord on June 29, 2025, in
Bakersfield, California. Born in Bakersfield on September 23, 1945, Charles was known for his kind heart, loving spirit, and occasional ornery streak.
A proud graduate of South High School, Class of 1963, Charles was an accomplished athlete who earned his varsity letter in track and field, running as part of the school's track team. His passion for running continued into adulthood, competing in numerous 10K races over the years and sharing that love of sport with his children. He also coached Special Olympics athletes, encouraging and inspiring individuals with developmental disabilities with his dedication and patience. Charles married his high school sweetheart, Kathy, in 1966, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love and devotion. In 1972, they moved to Taft, California, where they raised their family and became part of the close-knit community.
Charles devoted much of his career to serving the County of Kern through his work with the Westside Cemetery District. He remained committed to his role until his retirement in 1999, ensuring dignity and compassion in every aspect of his service.
A man of deep faith, Charles attended West Hills Church of the Nazarene, where he participated in many church activities. He also had a lifelong passion for restoring classic cars-most notably his beloved 1973 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. Whether on a trail or in the garage, Charles pursued his interests with enthusiasm and skill. Charles is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 59 years, Kathy, whom he deeply loved and cherished; sons Fred Evarts (Debbie), Rob Evarts (Krysti), and Matt Evarts (Stacy); daughter Bekki Dodson; grandchildren Alli, Nick, Ethan, Olivia, Chloe, Rylee, Zane, Lexxi, Nathan, Jayden, and Buchanan; great-grandchildren Lincoln, Navy, Reed, and Braxton; and sisters Marie Wheeler (Lawrence) and Mary Smith. He was preceded in death by his mother, Katherine Jackson, and his sister, Charlene Neal. Charles's life was a testament to faith, family, and service. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the memories he created with those he loved most. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, July 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at West Hills Church of the Nazarene in Taft.
