It's hard to believe Chuck has been gone five years now. I think of him often. Most recently, when his beloved Cleveland Browns were in the play off games, regaining much of their earlier glory that Chuck cherished in the midst of newsroom sports banter. Chuck was so much more than a co worker/mentor. I don't mean to sound corny but Chuck was that tough but good natured fellow necessary to corral a pesky/stubborn reporter like me. Chuck always took a personal interest, inquiring "Have you called your parents lately?" "How are your two brothers doing?" Chuck was the REAL life, genuine "Lou Grant" newsroom figure. I absolutely love the memories of Chuck and Garry, hotly debating a story, our pipe smoke filling the newsroom. It usually ended in laughter with Chuck saying, "Garry, your pipe tobacco is awful!" More laughter. Chuck frequently shared HIS family's status with me. He was VERY proud of "Junior" and kept me appraised of his son's success. Chuck also acknowledged how his wife, Lorraine, "put up with a lot of guff" and he was very fortunate. Chuck, you were one of a kind. You made it possible for me to work THIRTY ONE memorable years at Ch 7/Boston. I'll always be grateful. MISS YOU so much. Garry

I knew Chuck when I was a WNAC-TV courtroom artist from 1971 to 1975, and he was the wittiest, kindest person I encountered at the station. His remarkable skills were always in evidence, which allowed the rest of us to do quality work - because he instilled excellence in his work that inspired us (at least me). He was a genuine professional.

I can't believe a year has passed since Chuck left us. I have a mental picture of Chuck at his assignment desk, following today's inauguration events. Chuck is pounding on the keyboard, smoke billowing out of his pipe and his eyes are incredulous to the scenes unfolding on the TV screen. Chuck, nevertheless, is bellowing out orders to get local reaction and reminding all not to let personal bias influence our work.
