Charles Edward Heathcoat-affectionately known as Chuck, Charlie, Hillbilly, Papa, or simply Dad-passed away at the age of 75 on January 26, 2026, following a brief but intense battle with a vascular emergency. Born on September 30, 1950, Charles lived a life that exemplified unwavering faith, tireless dedication, and profound love, leaving an indelible legacy of inspiration for all who knew him. In his final moments, he reminded us that true strength lies not in the absence of trials, but in facing them with grace and gratitude, a true testament to the resilient spirit he embodied.
Charles's journey began in
Lexington, Alabama, where he was born to Arlene and Fred Heathcoat, just one of 17 children. From his earliest days, Charles's life was rooted in a deep love for the Lord, a passion that guided his every step. As a youth pastor in his younger years, he poured his heart into nurturing young souls, sharing the Gospel with infectious enthusiasm and wisdom. Those conversations about God-filled with scripture, stories of divine provision, and gentle encouragement-remained a cherished bond with his family, who found endless inspiration in his steadfast faith. Charles taught us that loving the Lord isn't just a belief; it's a daily call to action, motivating us to live with purpose, compassion, and unshakeable hope.
A man of quiet strength and boundless generosity, Charles was the epitome of selfless service. He was always the first to offer the shirt off his back or his last penny to someone in need, never once complaining, even amid personal pain. "Oh, I'll be fine-let's keep on going," he'd say with a smile, modeling resilience that challenged us to rise above adversity. As a devoted provider employed at Dana Inc., Charles was a pillar of hard work and reliability, showing up every day-sick or well-to support his family. He led by example, demonstrating what it means to be the steadfast man of the house: a protector, a teacher, and a guide who instilled in his children the vital truth that success comes from effort, not entitlement. "Money doesn't grow on trees," he'd remind them with a wink, "even though it comes from trees," blending humor with hard-earned wisdom to foster independence and gratitude.
Charles's hobbies reflected his versatile, hands-on spirit-a true jack of all trades who could fix cars, craft woodwork, or tackle any project with skill and joy. Yet, his greatest passion was fishing, a pursuit he shared generously with his children and grandchildren, turning quiet outings into lessons in patience, perseverance, and the simple beauty of creation. He often joked with his family, stating, "When I pass, chop me up and feed me to the fish!"-a lighthearted vision of returning to the waters he loved, reminding us to embrace life's waves with laughter and love.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife of many years, Brenda Joyce Heathcoat, to whom he remained devoted until his last breath, even whispering to the nurses of his enduring love for his "beautiful wife." He leaves behind his children: sons Patrick Daniel McNeese (Kimberly), Charles Edward Heathcoat Jr. (Beth), and daughters: Cathy Denise Powell (Jeremy), Cathy Bernice Curtis (Darrell), Joyce Maria Heathcoat, and Crystal Marie Boyer (Joel), as well as Joshua Erik McNeese, who preceded him in death. Charles's legacy endures through a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each carrying forward his spirit of faith, hard work, and family devotion. He is also survived by his siblings: Mary Fisher, Millie Thornten, and Evon Estes. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Arlene and Fred Heathcoat; his mother-in-law, Patricia Ann Hatt; and 13 siblings.
