My first exposure to commercial fishing was as a crew member on the Pocahontas with Charlie at the helm. For those of you that knew him... just think about that for a moment... your first time fishing and it´s with Charlie; wow. I am ever so grateful for that experience and the opportunity to have known Charlie; he had an impact on me that lasted a lifetime. Charlie was truly an extraordinary man. Sincere condolences to Gail and family. RIP Charlie.

Charlie, my friend. I first met Charlie when I was in HS. Over the years we became very good friends. I went into the Navy. Charlie, obviously smarter then me by establishing himself in the fishing world. I did help him a bit by knitting heads aboard the ship. I'd bring them home on leave. My dad and brother also became good friends, while building Charlie and Gail's home. Once he no longer was fishing, we spent alot of time in my shop. We built him a skiff and swapped so many fish stories. I'm going to miss those visits. RIP my friend

I never served in the military and, hence, missed out on the discipline that is instilled in boot camp. Working for Charlie was my boot camp. We all have several key building blocks that shape the course of our lives. Working for Captain Charlie was certainly one of mine. I will cherish your memory as long as I live. Love.

Gail, I wish I had met Charlie. He was a wonderful man, husband, and father. What a fabulous smile. I hold you in my heart, Gail, as you have held so many in our Royal River Chorus.
Much love, Barbara Graustein

Always loved `sharing´ the boatyard at Gowen´s with Charlie. Always enjoyed talking with him. Having left Maine in 2014, I lost contact with him, but always thought of him when purchasing swordfish. Sadly, now I can stop thinking that maybe Charlie caught that swordfish. Our prayers are with you in this loss. Captain Hal Cushing, Chippewa and St. Croix.
