Dudley-Charles Ray Kornegay, 73, passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at UNC Health Wayne. Born in Wayne County on February 24, 1952, he was the son of the late James Clifton and Julia Brogden Kornegay.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Cristy Kornegay King and husband, Josh; son, Todd Kornegay and wife, Crystal; grandsons, Jordan Kornegay and Kingston King; brothers, Gene Kornegay and Kenneth Kornegay; and his best friend and the mother of his children, Hope Kearney, whom he loved dearly.
Charles was a devoted husband, father, friend, and a gifted mechanic whose hands and heart were always at work. A lifelong craftsman of the automotive world, Charles built a career rooted in precision, patience, and pride. He shared his passion generously as an automotive instructor with Work Source East, where he guided countless students and inspired the next generation of mechanics.
Charles had an unwavering love for cars-both fixing them and caring for them. His vehicles were always kept in pristine condition, each one a reflection of the dedication and attention to detail that defined his life. He never missed an opportunity to tinker, whether it was refining an engine, improving a tool, or simply exploring how things worked.
Outside of the garage, Charles found peace at the beach. The sound of the waves and the feel of the ocean breeze brought him comfort and joy. Time spent by the water-whether with loved ones or in quiet reflection-was something he treasured deeply.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service to celebrate Charles' life at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Jonathan Ange officiating. Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
