Almost 21 years post 9.11.01 I found a simple metal bracelet 'Charles A. Mauro Jr. WTC' while going through family belongings. I am not sure where the bracelet came from, and I am glad to have found it. We'll put it in a special place.

Chuck, you will never be forgotten. I enjoyed our work together in aviation. As we had the same eye condition we shared our mutual healing process post oprations. Your humorous style in dealing with challenges was always uplifting to me. I am glad to have known you. 9-11-11

As I stitched your name on the memorial that I am doing for all of the victims, I prayed for you and your family. Please know that your death was not in vain. We will always remember. God Bless.

We shared a name. Now my wife Nancy and I share your sorrow.

My name is Laura Reinfried; I am an Aon employee in Irvine, California. Our activities committee met and wanted to do something special for our fellow employees on 9/11. I suggested that each employee here in Irvine wear the name of an employee who was lost. Today we handed out the nametags for everyone to wear; I received Chuck’s name. I wanted to send my love and prayers to him and his family. I also lost someone very special to me and this poem was sent to me. I hope it brings you as much comfort as it brought to me. I am so sorry for the loss of Charlie, my next door neighbor for twenty-four years. Katan Avenue just isn't the same anymore. We didn't talk much but I always knew his prescence by the smell of his cigars and the sound of his radio announcing the scores of a game involving his favorite baseball or football team (Giants). I know that my father is enjoying Charlie company up in heaven.

Plese remember that our loved ones never leave us. They stay close within our hearts forever.

Charles was wonderful, colorful guy.

He was my life, my soul. He will be

sorrowfully missed. I want to thank

all who expressed their thoughts about him to me. I know he was well

liked and loved.

Putting a face from the past to one of the missing. A lifetime ago, back in the mid-1970s, I worked in Manhattan, on William Street with a man of pleasant spirit, and efficient ways. I don't recall much about him except his genuine fondness for strong cigars and piercing, keenly aware dark eyes. Until a few weeks ago, this is a man I hadn't thought of in over 25 years.



On a recent visit to New York City and long-time friends, another of our “used to be” work group, told me of the Memorial Service she had attended the previous Saturday for our former associate. In that brief moment, my splintered grief for the World Trade Center victims, their families, my country and a city I once called home for 10-12 hours each workday, came into sharper focus. It took on a more personal meaning.



One of my age, a former colleague, and a peer who---having made the choice to work beyond the time usually accorded to step down---had met a violent and totally unnecessary end. What a terrible, abysmal waste! At that moment, this struggle took on new meaning. In remembrance of Charles A. “Chuck” Mauro, a fine man and one I once called friend, this is now my personal war.
