Charles Mayo Obituary
Charles Edward Mayo, Jr.
GREENVILLE - Charles Edward Mayo Jr., 76, went to be with his Savior after passing peacefully at his home on September 30th, 2024. Charles, the only son of Charles Edward Mayo and Mary Ellenburg Mayo, was born in Greenville, NC on June 25th, 1948. Charles attended East Carolina University and went on to serve in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era. He later met his "girl," Annette Vick, and the couple wed on December 22nd, 1974.
Charles was a lifelong resident of the Town of Falkland. An active and supportive member of the community, Charles took great pride in his hometown and helped facilitate much of its growth as he worked as a charter member of the Falkland Rescue Squad where he worked as a volunteer EMT for many years.
From an early age, Charles developed a deep passion for mechanisms and transportation. He was fascinated by planes, trains, automobiles, ambulances, buses, tractors, and equipment- anything with an engine. His curiosity and desire to learn everything he could about each one shaped his life and career. This passion, combined with his creativity and love of learning, led him to a fulfilling 45-year career at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, later known as Vidant, and now ECU Health. As Administrator of Transportation, Grounds and Campus Bus System, He achieved numerous accomplishments such as implementing and streamlining systems while building long lasting relationships.
In his free time Charles was rarely idle. He could often be found working on projects around his family farm, whether restoring a tractor in his shop or lending equipment to people in need. He loved visiting the local farmers, sharing stories and advice, and was always on the lookout for his next project. Auctions were a favorite pastime- so much so that he worked at local auctions, enjoying the fast pace and the chance to connect with others who shared his passion for equipment and farming.
But Charles was not all work – he saw life as an adventure, full of opportunities to learn, explore and connect with others. He believed in embracing every moment, whether it was tackling a new challenge on the farm, lending a hand to a neighbor, or finding joy in the simple pleasures of life. For Charles, each day was a chance to build something meaningful, create lasting memories, and never let an opportunity pass him by.
To carry on his love and legacy he leaves behind his wife, Annette Vick Mayo; daughter, Susan Mayo Andrews, and husband, Daniel; mother-in-law, Lillie Vick; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Dunning, and husband, Ronald, Janie Dail, and husband, Andy; special cousins, Amy Stephenson and Olive Cox; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
The funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 am in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial in Pinewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 – 8 pm at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
