JOHNSON CITY - Mr. Charles E. McCoy, " Charlie " passed away November 17, 2023 in the Johnson City Medical Center.
Charlie was a proud member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and past president of the Solon Gentry Sunday School Class. He attended public schools in Johnson City and graduated from SHHS class of 1943 and immediately entered the US ARMY AIR CORPS as an Aviation Cadet and graduated from Bombardier school as a 2nd Lt. Sept 1944 where he remained as an instructor. He was later assigned to a B-29 crew, which he loved. Serving in the 73rd Bomb Wing on Saipan, Mariana Island, he flew 13 combat missions against the Japanese Empire and was a part of the fly-over during the Japanese Surrender Ceremony in Tokyo Bay. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor. After returning home in May 1946, he married Doris Ramsey on August 16,1946 and later attended East Tennessee State College. Well, now time to go to work, he was employed at Westinghouse Electric Corp. as a Lamp Application Engineer and in 1955 he transferred to Virginia Beach, VA. He attended Bayside Christian Church where he served as Treasurer, Trustee and Board of Deacons. Time for having some fun, he was a member of the Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club and served as a Board of Director. He was a past President of the Bayside Lions Club. Retiring in 1985 he became very active with his sons in Kart Racing, taking him to Roebling Roads in Savannah, GA, Summit Point, W. VA and at major NASCAR tracks as a team winning many championships. After the loss of his wife, Doris, he returned to Johnson City and then married Vennia Cline, thus having girls now in his life, Beverly, and Carol who now along with their mother would try to slow Charlie down. Not slowing down too much, he would become a member of the Johnson City Country Club where he and Vennia would go on to enjoy many friends and activities there. Charlie loved his golf and the little bets that go along with it. Charlie lost his wife Vennia in May 2015 and continued to be very active in the church and club. If you ever met Charlie, you would have a friend who would not forget you. He loved helping friends in need and would be there when the time arose. Charlie was a True Patriot & Hero who loved his veterans.
