Charles Franklin (Chuck) Midkiff passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on November 29, 2025, at Belle Meadow Farm, his home in Montpelier. Chuck was born on March 27, 1947, in Charleston, South Carolina and grew up in Virginia Beach, where he attended Princess Anne High School and played football. Chuck earned his BS degree magna cum laude from Old Dominion University, and his law degree from the College of William and Mary School of Law, from which he graduated at the young age of 23. He was elected to honorary membership in the Order of the Coif, was Editor-in-Chief of Law Review, and graduated second in his class.
Chuck served his country in the U.S. Army, JAG Corps, and was a member of the Lawyers' Military Defense Committee defending GIs at Long Binh, South Viet Nam. He was co-defense counsel in the first randomly-selected jury trial in military history, which was featured in the November 8, 1971, edition of Time Magazine. Chuck was a proud Viet Nam veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star.
In 1987, Chuck founded what is now Midkiff, Muncie & Ross, P.C. He grew his firm to over 30 attorneys with five offices serving the Mid-Atlantic region. Chuck served as President and Chairman of MMR since its inception, mentoring many attorneys and insurance adjusters along the way. He actively practiced law at the highest level to his last day. He leaves a lasting legacy of professionalism. A zealous advocate for clients and a dear friend to many, he always held himself and others to a high bar. He pursued excellence in all things.
Chuck was a well-respected leader at the professional bar for more than 50 years. Well-known among his peers in the Richmond legal community, he was considered a national, regional, and local expert in his fields of practice which included workers' compensation, accounting, employment law, ethics, malpractice, and energy—he was a veritable legend. Additionally, Chuck served as Commissioner on the Governor's Advisory Committee on Workers' Compensation and, for nearly thirty years, was a lobbyist for business and insurance interests before the Virginia General Assembly.
During his distinguished career, Chuck received many honors and awards. He was admitted into the American College of Workers' Compensation Lawyers and was included in Best Lawyers in America, Virginia Super Lawyers, and Virginia Lawyers Weekly Hall of Fame. He was selected as one of the Legal Elite Attorneys in Virginia.
Chuck had a gentle and generous soul, and was down to earth. He was the epitome of a self-made man. He loved horses, travel, scuba diving, sailing, being with friends and family, and his dogs: two Great Danes, Bella and Billy, and the "little guy," Bentley. He was respectful to others and received respect and admiration for his life and accomplishments. He will be missed greatly by family, friends, and colleagues.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie (Les) Midkiff, Sr., and Virginia Mae DeBord Midkiff, and is survived by his loving sister, Carolyn Strahl (Bruce), nephew Lance Strahl (Tess), brother Leslie Midkiff, Jr. (Pat), his five children, Heather Enderle (Thaddeus), Alyssa Camp (Doug), Ericka Lamm, Charles (Chad) Midkiff, Jr. (Riley), Rebecca Midkiff (Anthony LaRocca), and his beautiful granddaughter, Charlotte.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 18, 2025, at Bliley's Funeral Home (3801 Augusta Ave.) from 2:00 PM-4:00 PM and 6:00 PM-8:00 PM. Graveside service will be Friday, December 19 at Hollywood Cemetery at 12:30 PM. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 19, 2025, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 8787 River Road, at 2:00 PM. Reception to follow.
