Charles "Charlie" William Murphy passed away peacefully at the Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital in Columbia on November 11, 2025.
He was born April 9, 1946 in Kennett, MO to the late John and Margaret (Rother) Murphy.
Charlie married Terry Sweede June 15, 1985 and they were united in marriage for 40 years.
He attended Fulton High School before serving his country in Vietnam as a proud U.S. Navy veteran. From 1964 to 1968, he was stationed with the Naval Support Activity in Da Nang. After returning home, he built a long and dedicated career in the food management and catering industry, working for McDonnell Douglas, American Food Management, and Ferrugia & Sons. He later continued his service in the field at the Fulton Treatment Center, where he worked until his retirement.
Charlie was an avid golfer and fisherman, known for competing in golf tournaments across Missouri and for spending countless hours at secret fishing spots with his father-in-law, "Big Al." He loved to cook, often catering for events and participating in cook-off competitions, where his kitchen became well-known for his cooking skills and love of cooking.
He enjoyed attending concerts and local fairs with his wife, Terry, and their close friends. During the years his children attended St. Peter's School, Charlie was an active presence in the church, school community, and the Knights of Columbus. A loyal fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Cardinals, he especially cherished attending several Cardinal Caravans. He loved all sports, but nothing compared to his passion for The Masters Golf Tournament-and he was fortunate enough to attend one.
A proud Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Charlie held a deep respect for veterans, active-duty military members, and wounded warriors. Being selected for the Central Missouri Honor Flight #36 on November 3, 2015, was one of the great honors of his life. Charlie also enjoyed yardwork and most outdoor activities, but above all, he treasured his family. The pride of his life was his children, along with his beloved dog, Mocha, and Mocha's brother, Brownie. Charlie will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Terry Murphy of Fulton; daughter, Elise Murphy of Columbia; son, John Murphy; sister Pat (Don) Grimm of Fulton; sister, Mary Spencer of St. Charles; brother-in-law, Tony Sweede of Fulton; sisters-in-law Marla Andrews of Fulton, Sharon Murphy of New Bloomfield, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, John D. Murphy; mother, Margaret M. Murphy; brother, David Murphy and brother, Larry Murphy.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
