Charles A. Sclafani passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at the age of 80. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 3, 1942, the son of Joseph and Yolanda (Liotta) Sclafani.
Charles attended Long Island University and earned a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Baruch College. He retired from IBM Corp as Director of Corporate Development out of the Somers, NY office. Through the years he worked at IBM facilities, and in various capacities at Mount Pleasant and White Plains as well as for the company in Japan from 1985-1990, and during those years had the opportunity to travel the world with his family. He has resided in Mahopac since moving there from Yorktown Heights in 1975.
Charles was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church in Mahopac where he sung in the choir for 45 years. He was also a member of the Archdiocesan Choir, singing not only at St. Patrick's Cathedral but also visiting Rome with the Choir and singing there.
Charlie enjoyed spending time with his family at his home on Cape Cod especially during the summer where all were always welcomed. He loved the outdoors, especially fly fishing and hunting, having taught many the art of tying flies. Charlie is a lifetime member of the Yorktown Sportsman's Club having held the positions of President, member of Executive Board, chairman of the Camp DeBruce Committee which sent young people to the environmental camp each summer, and chairman of both the audit and by-laws committees.
Charlie was an Eagle Scout who passed on his love of scouting to his 4 sons who too earned the honor and rank of Eagle Scout. Charlie was an assistant scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 89 that was sponsored by St. John the Evangelist Church. He was a counselor for Catholic Boy Scouts who wished to pursue the Ad Altare Dei religious emblem which helps Catholic scouts grow in their relationship with God and the church. In 1995, when Pope John Paul II came to New York City, Charlie organized and accompanied a group of Boy Scouts to Central Park when Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass there, a momentous occasion for all.
On January 23, 1965 he married Diane Janiak at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Brooklyn. In addition to Diane, he is survived by his children, Christopher and his wife, Mary of Wappingers Falls, NY, Matthew and his wife, Jennifer of Southlake, TX, David and his wife, Bonita of Agoura Hills, CA, Patricia Rubino and her husband, Paul of Hopewell Junction, NY and Charles and his wife, Jessica of Mahopac; his 14 beloved grandchildren, Michaela (Jeffrey), Danielle (Michael), Rachel, Julia Rose, Katelyn Jane, Courtney, Dean, Ty, Ming Lee, Dominic, Michael, Lucy, Charlotte and Jack and his great grandson, Salvatore. He was predeceased by his sister, Lillian LaRocco.
Charlie enjoyed attending his grandchildren's events - graduations, concerts and sports games, asking each weekend, "Are there any games today? Who and where?"
Visiting will be held on Saturday, March 25 from 3-6 pm and Sunday, March 26 from 2-6 pm at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 27 at 11:30 am at St. John the Evangelist Church in Mahopac with interment to follow at St. Denis Cemetery, Hopewell Junction, NY.
