When I was very young, Charlie and his family lived behind me and I was scared to death of him. I was good friends with his daughter and son, but until I was a senior in high-school, I was afraid of him. But, the way his children revered him and loved him and how hard he worked to support his family helped me know what a good father he was.

As an older teenager, I had the privilege of listening to stories of how he served our country in Vietnam and how loyalty to his own was built into his fiber and fabric. He taught me a lot about family, honor, and love.

He tolerated the damage we did to the fence separating my house from his as we constantly jumped it and kept his kids out late at night playing hide-and-seek or kick-the-can. I will always remember how mad he got at me and a few boys who in poor-taste "newspapered his yard" in a child-hood prank.

After his wife died, I had the privilege to sit and talk with him about his memories of her for an hour or two. He loved her and it showed as he reflected on their life together.

I remember how he called his wife every day just to check in when I was young. We could set our schedule by it.

I was so glad that he lived with his youngest and my good friend Dana. I am sure her family brought him a lot of joy during his last years.

Charlie, you will be missed, but the legacy you leave behind in your children and grandchildren will continue.
