Charles J. Tyburski passed away on Jan. 31, 2025. He was 90. Chuck was born in New Kensington, Pa., on Feb. 25, 1934. He was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, the Air Command and Staff College of the Air Force and Moritz College of Law at the Ohio State University. He practiced law for more than 50 years with the firm of Black, McCuskey, Souers and Arbaugh. He was a past president of the Stark County Bar Association.
Chuck was an Air Force ROTC graduate and served on active duty; in the Ohio Air National Guard and in the Air Force Reserve. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a member of the Association of Graduates of the U.S. Air Force Academy. His military associate decorations include the Air Force Commendation Medal.
Chuck had many interests. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as planting and tending a vegetable garden each spring. He and his wife, Nancy, enjoyed travel. He visited all but one continent. He and Nancy enjoyed spending several months each winter at Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Chuck was active in a number of civic, charitable and educational organizations. He was an emeritus member of the Advisory Board of The Salvation Army, an emeritus member of the Board of Walsh University, an emeritus member of the National Council of the Ohio State Moritz College of Law, a life member of the Board of Trustees of the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges and a past member of the Stark Development Board.
He was a past chairman of the Boards of The Salvation Army, the Canton Medical Education Foundation, the Sisters of Charity Health System, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Canton, the Central Catholic High School Advisory Board, the Canton Student Loan Foundation and Catholic Charities of the Youngstown Diocese. His awards include the Others Award conferred by The Salvation Army; The Walsh University distinguished service medal; and the Lex Christi Award conferred by the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown for service to community in church.
Nancy, to whom Chuck was married 57 years, died in 2020. They are survived by four children, 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild. His children are Christy Callinan (John); Stacey Quarles (Andrew); David Tyburski (Jacqueline) and Jennifer Bastable (Alan).
Chuck received exceptional and compassionate care in his final weeks from the staff at Bethany Nursing Home and Mercy Medical Hospice. He also wanted to thank everyone at the Alsatian where he resided for the past four years.
Chuck will be cremated and his remains interred at the National Cemetery of the Western Reserve with full military honors. Full arrangements will be handled by the Arnold Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church on Friday, Feb. 14 at 11 a.m. with Msgr. Lewis F. Gaetano officiating. Family will receive friends one hour before the Mass. The live-stream can be found at www.stmichaelcanton.org/funeralservices. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army or Walsh University.
