Massena: Charles S. "Scooter" Van Alst, age 35, passed away unexpectedly on December 8, 2025, at his home. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Phillips Memorial Home in Massena.
Born on November 23, 1990, in Trenton, NJ, to Robert L. Smith and Nanci (Van Alst) Strunk. Charles was most recently employed as a dispatcher working for Massena Transport, at one time he worked at Kinney Drugs for several years in Massena. Scooter enjoyed hunting and just being outdoors. He also enjoyed all things associated with farm life, being on the farm and tending to the needs of the animals. He had a special spot for birds of all kinds.
Scooter is survived by his mother Nanci Strunk of Massena, NY, three nephews Cameron, Kaidon, and Zyonn Smith-Sweet. A brother Robert and wife Michelle Smith of Saylorsburg, PA, and their children, Courtney and Zack. A sister Patty (Smith) Neyer and wife Alana of Scranton, PA, and her children Jeanne and Michael along with a sister Bambi (Smith) Dorson and husband John of Carbondale, PA, and their children, Alanah and Alissah. His aunt Donna (Van Alst) Brodie and husband Frederick of Albany, NY, and their children Rafael and Jonas and an uncle, Joseph Scerbo of Georgia.
He was predeceased by his father Robert L. Smith, his sister Codi Smith, his uncle Charles Smith and aunt Jeanne (Smith) Scerbo, maternal grandparents, Ralph and Marie (Slatina) Van Alst, paternal grandfather Charles Smith. He also leaves behind a mother cat Miss Kitty and her kitten Orangeman.
