Condolences to your family on the passing of Charles. He was a fine man. I met you all several times and have fond memories of our adventures and debates in Connecticut. My Grampy , Frank, Charles Uncle , would tell us many wonderful stories of the family. I grew up so proud that I could enrich my life by reading and learning all I could about poetry and Literature. The Van Doren family was quite extraordinary. We would go to Tuscola from Texas and Oklahoma every time we could. We girls would take turns spending time in the summer at their house. I was always putting on plays in the basement dressing my sister, Barbara and dragging her everywhere. While there at Christmas , we girls slept in the attic and looked at all of the amazing things there. We were able to visit John more when they were in Chicago. I was not aware he died so recently. My grandmother Grace, died of leukemia after many years in the 70s. Grampy took care of her with no complaints. After she passed, he could smoke his cigar in the house, eat pizza and watch Notre Dame. However the stress of taking care of her , caused him to suffer a stroke one morning baking cookies. It was so serious we moved him to Ardmore Oklahoma to be with us. Mom , Martha, nearly died from a medical procedure so Barbara and I took turns trying to take care of him. It was hard seeing him lose his dignity due to the lack of talking and taking care of himself. I was angry he didnt have more time to be himself and remained in that state too long. My mom and dad died 17 years this June due to a speeding car running into them. Mom was not well but dad was like Frank, minimizing her problems but we were close as you all have been. She could still play the piano by ear and dad and I would have her play as we sang along. I just wanted you to know that Barbara and I still own and run Grampys farm in Douglas and Cole counties. In Illinois. We have a wonderful farmer that has it producing corn and soybeans. We will pass it to our girls. Very loving and strong families survive. You are proof of that. Love and prayers to you all .
