Mr. Charles Edward West was born on June 20, 1933 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Mr. Lee H. West and Mrs. Ruby M. West. Preceding him in death also was his only sister, Mrs. Bonita Cannedy.
Charlie, as he was affectionately known, attended IPS schools #23 and # 17. He attended Crispus Attucks High School. While there at Attucks, Charlie was a member of the 1955 Basketball team led by Oscar Robinson. They were the first Black team that won the state championship. He also lettered in football and baseball at Attucks High School.
In 1951, Charlie was employed at Allison Transmission. In 1953 he joined the United States Airforce as an Airframe Mechanic. He was promoted to Airman 1st Class and received an Honorable discharge in 1961. On March 16, 1960, Charlie joined the Indianapolis Fire Department and was assigned duties of a Sub at Fire station# 1. In August 1966, he was promoted to the rank of Chauffeur. March 12, 1969, Charlie was later promoted to Lieutenant at station #31. He was promoted to Captain at station# 1 on March 31, 1971. While there he qualified as Master Firefighter in Tactics by the state of Indiana. Charlie also worked at Citizens Gas Company on his off days. Charlie received many awards and commendations while employed at the Fire Department: The Boy Scouts Fire Citizen Award, a Commendation for the rescue of a young lady from her burning home, Certificates of Merits for Longevity at Station #1 to name a few. Charlie retired from the Indianapolis Fire Department on June 19, 2003.
Charlie was a member of Christ Missionary Baptist Church before uniting with the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church under the pastorship of the late Dr. T. T. Newman. Charlie served on the Stewardship committee for many years, volunteered at the food pantry, and worked in any capacity where he was needed at the church.
Charlie was married to Linda D. Hall on July 14, 1979. To this union of 43 years, two children were born: Christopher Bryan and Lindsey Danielle (Bryan).
He is also the father of Ronald, Gary (Gloria), and Kenneth West, Donna West Southers, Patricia (Jack), and Nichole West (Jordan). eight grandkids and eight-great grandkids.
Charlie also leaves to cherish his memory two brothers- in -laws, Robert L. Hall, Frankie Gamer; four sisters-in -laws, Carolyn Hall, Curtiestine Madu, Cheryl Gamer, and Hongmei Hall, and many nieces and nephews.
Charlie also leaves a countless number of close friends, Willie Cole, Eddie Exford, Charles Hibbitt, Archie Moore, Fred Moore, Tyrone Moore, James Walker, and Pastor Theron D. Williams I, and many adopted children that affectionately refer to him as " Dad".
