Charley Mae Garrison was born on December 27, 1939, in Macon, Mississippi, to the late Charlie Tate and Lula Stewart Tate. From an early age, Charley Mae displayed a love for learning, community, and faith that would define her remarkable life.
She attended Robinson Elementary School and graduated from Fairfield Industrial High School. Charley Mae was baptized at an early age and faithfully dedicated her life to the Lord as a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairfield, Mississippi.
Charley Mae was united in holy matrimony with George Garrison Sr., and from this blessed union, three children were born: George Jr., Renea, and Michael. Family was at the heart of Charley Mae's life, and she nurtured her children with love, wisdom, and unwavering support.
A woman of service and generosity, Charley Mae gave tirelessly of her time and talents. She was actively involved in the educational programs at Public School #10, Rosa L. Parks Arts High School, and Eastside High School, ensuring scholars received the guidance and support they needed to thrive. At Eastside High, she proudly served as one of the "Marching Band Moms," encouraging and celebrating the students' accomplishments.
Charley Mae was an active and devoted member of Paradise Baptist Church, where she held a special place in the hearts of Bishop Jethro C. James Jr. and First Lady Dr. Kim Yancey James, whom she loved like family. She served faithfully on the Amalgamated Choir, the Liturgical Dance Ministry, the Women's Ministry, the Mother's Board, and the Pastor's Aide Ministry.
Blessed with the voice of an angel, Charley Mae shared her musical gift widely. Her extraordinary vocal talents earned her roles in two off-Broadway gospel musicals, "Mama I Want to Sing" and "We Love Gospel Music." She also performed in "A Miracle of Love" at the Southern Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California. Additionally, she was a cherished member of the Lloyd Reese Singers, Seven Voices of Harmony, and the Jubilation Choir of Newark, New Jersey.
Charley Mae's life was marked by selflessness, compassion, and joy. She gave freely of herself, leaving an indelible impact on everyone she met. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Garrison Sr.; son, Michael Garrison; grandson, Jamar; sister, Mildred; daughter-in-law, Darlene Garrison, and two chosen grandchildren, Wanda Faye Chaplin and Jaikey Chaplin.
Charley Mae leaves to cherish her memories and celebrate her life, children, George Garrison Jr. and Renea Garrison Simmons; son-in-law, Willie Simmons; granddaughter, Thelma Garrison; grandsons, George Garrison III and Willie Simmons; great-granddaughter, Janiyah Garrison; her sister, Mary Tate Willis; and three chosen grandchildren, Jaquis McDaniels, Tia Mack, and Daron A. Custis. She is also survived by a host of beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends whose lives were touched by her love.
