Mr. Charlie Paul Clark, Jr. was born on December 3, 1931 to Mattie Shaw Clark and Charlie Paul Clark, Sr. In Greenville, MS. He was a happy child. He was the youngest of three children: Alte Clark Jones and James "Tweed" Clark, Sr.
He began his education at Sacred Heart School in Greenville, MS. He had perfect attendance two years in a row, even with a broken foot. He cried to his mother to let him go to school unlike most children. He spent a copious amount of time in his high school years going to Sacred Heart School in Detroit, MI but he also graduated from Sacred Heart in Greenville, MS. He graduated from Sacred Heart in 1950.
Mr. Clark worked several different jobs as he traveled back and forth between Michigan and Mississippi. When he was in Greenville, he worked at Greenville Compress and Mosso Chemical. When he was in Detroit, he carried the mail and worked at Chrysler Dodge Main Plant.
In 1958, he went to Xavier University in New Orleans, LA for one year. He enjoyed the college life, but he met the love of his life, Carlean Scotten Manning. They were married on October 31, 1959 and moved back to Greenville, MS; where he worked at Mosso and Greenville Compress. The next year, they had a child named Charles Paul Clark III. He worked hard to support his family. His mother died in 1959 and his dad died in 1958. On June 5, 1967, he fathered his second child, Chlorinda Bernice Clark. They went everywhere together. She was truly Daddy's Little Girl.
In 1964, he decided that he was not making enough money in Greenville and moved back to Detroit. He started working for Chrysler again at the Dodge Main Plant. He benefitted from union wages and privileges. He started off as a glass specialist, then installed seats in cars. He furthered his education and took some engineering and design classes through Chrysler. He worked in that department for almost two years but decided the commute was to long to Auburn Hills and went back to Dodge Main. When Dodge Main closed he transferred to the Jefferson Assembly Plant. He took a medical retirement from there in 1982.
Mr. Clark was a devoted Catholic. He belonged to Sacred Heart Church in Greenville, MS in his early years. When he moved to Detroit, he was a member of Sacred Heart Church. When his wife retired in 1998 from the Detroit Public School System, he found a new church home at Holy Family Catholic Church, in Jackson, MS. In 1999, he and his wife celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary. They renewed their wows in a grand affair with all of their families. Mr. Clark had no friends, everyone was family to him. He always said, "I love my people."
He was a member of the Knights of Saint Peter Claiver. He kept his membership active in Detroit. Father Kapp Council #71 and assended to become a member of the Fourth Degree with St. Martin Depores Assembly #11. He went to the conventions and conferences all of the nation when he was able to travel. He held several different offices during his 50 year tenure. As a Knight.
He loved everyone. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Mattie Clark; his aunts: Beaula, and Beatrice Clark; uncles: Nero Sr. and Aunt Gertrude Clark; aunt Gert lived to be 102 years old. Aunt Mattie Powell was his wife's great aunt who lived to 106, others say 114. All of Aunt Gert's children died before her except Kate Lytle of Detroit. Hoover's cousins: Len, Nero, Jr, Erna Mae and Dorothy Clark all died in Detroit in the 2000s. They are survived by their children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. His sister Alte Jones died in 1995, her husband, Clinton "Mike" Jones was like his big brother. They had only one daughter, Cathy who loved her Uncle Charlie. When she was little she always said she wanted to marry him. Mike died in the early 2000's. He had a first cousin, Issom Strauter better known as "Gray Eye who leaved in Detroit. Gray Eye died in the early 80's and Hoover would visit his first cousin every week during his long sickness.
He had another group of first cousins that lived in Chicago. Led by his uncle Carlito W. Clark who died in the 80's. C.D. Burns, the brother of Grey Eye, Eula Mae Robinson, C, D, Burns both died in the 2000's. But the children and grandchildren literally inhabit the entire apartment building. It was an eight family flat.
He had two cousin on his mother's side of the family living in Greenville, MS. Ann Madie Parker and her sister, Nola. Nola died in September 2022. Ann is healthy and 73 years old. As you can plainly see all of his relatives live all over the country.
There are also a group of relatives in California. He called California "The Promised Land." His brother, James "Tweed" Clark left Mississippi and vowed to never return. He left there in the 40's after doing a tour of duty in France during World War II. He had a full group of children: James Clark, Jr., Lajuana, Robert, Ricky, Larry, Latisha, Art, Kent, Lisa, and Marco. Tweed, Ricky, Larry and Robert preceded Hoover in death.
Upon moving to Jackson, MS, he was around his wife's siblings and there children. They were his people. George "Deg" Manning has three daughters: Debra, Gail and Carla who all loved him. Deg is 94 years old and his wife Lucille died many years ago. Ola Howard has three children: Oliver, Marchessa and Melanie who all loved him too. Roy Howard died in the 2000's and Ola is 92. He adopted five other children: Richard Moner of Detroit; Agzramo Emanuel "Doc" and Lizzie Carter of Jackson; Ted and Mary Smith of Canton. They all him and called him Dad. He loved and supported them in anyway that he could.
He garnered two more brothers in Jackson. Ossie Whittington and Julius Adams. Who were always by his side and when he was unable to drive they came and picked him up for church and drove him around anywhere he wanted to go.
Mr. Clark had three daughters-in-law; Gayle, Yvonnee and Crystal. Gayle had no children. Yvonnie had one son, Ellie Thompson of Oakland, CA; and Crystal Alexis had three children: Alexis, Allen and Zarko. Zarko died at 30 year old. Daddy always said that Crystal was his favorite. He told her that she owned the house. He loved Crystal. She loved him too and they spent a lot of time together talking and watching TV. He had two more groups of brothers. In Detroit, he had "The Young Lions": Art Elom, Bill Davenport, Albert Wright and Elgie McCoy. They were known around "Paradise Valley" in Detroit. This was an area off Alfred Street, where there were a lot of clubs. They went out every weekend in Detroit before they all got married and settled down. They all turned out to be amazing fathers and husbands and all preceded him in death.. The second group was "The Greenville Club", all of them migrated to Detroit in the late 50's and early 60's: Warren "Nip" Bridges, Issac Bean and James Theodus Johnson. Nip is still alive in Detroit. Issac Bean and James Johnson returned to Greenville preceding him in death.
Mr. Charlie Paul Clark, Jr. was also known as "D-Doc, Mr. Boots, Hoover, Cat, Dad, Daddy, Old Tag, Papa Clark, Big Charles, Champ, Tag, Buddy, and Unk. He was a man of many talents and many names. He played the guitar, banjo, and harmonica. He could sing and dance. He sang in the choir at Sacred Heart and Holy Family. He traveled the world and went around the world and lived in France for two summers. He loved his two puppies: Max and Snowball. He was a good swimmer, ice skater and roller skater. He was a tremendous softball and baseball player.
Mr. Charlie Paul Clark, Jr. is survived by his son, Charles P. Clark, III (Crystal); his daughter, Chlorinda B. Clark; grandchildren: Alexis M. Winston Allen X. Winston and the late Zarko Lance Ellis, III; his uncle George Manning; his aunt, Ola Howard; his caregiver, Tina Owens and Westalean Campbell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Mr. Charlie Paul Clark, Jr. loved all of his people, but most of all, he loved the Lord. He looked at EWTN everyday and said his Rosary daily. He prayed constantly. He was not afraid of death. He said, "When he died, I just want to go sit at the table of the Lord." He stated that he was going to have a big welcoming committee when he gets to Heaven.
Funeral services for Mr. Charlie Paul Clark, Jr. will take place on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 820 Forest Ave., Jackson, Mississippi. His Final Resting Place will be at Detroit Memorial Park West Cemetery, 25062 Plymouth Rd, Redford Charter Twp, MI with the date and other Memorial Services to be announced.
