Charlotte Guntermann Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Best Funeral Services Phoenix on Jan. 31, 2026.
Charlotte Gail Guntermann (1938 – 2026)

Charlotte Gail Guntermann, Professor Emerita of Spanish and Foreign Language Education at Arizona State University, passed away on January 22, 2026, at the age of 87.

Before beginning her long academic career, Dr. Guntermann served in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica, an experience that deepened her commitment to cross cultural communication and inspired her lifelong focus on language education. Dr. Guntermann devoted her career to advancing the teaching of languages and cultures. She served for decades in ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, where she taught courses in Spanish, foreign language pedagogy, and teacher education. She was also a Fulbright Scholar, contributing to international collaboration in language education and teacher development, and served as grant evaluator for the National Endowment for the Humanities. Her work influenced a generation of educators across the United States and abroad.

She was widely known in the field for her scholarship on proficiency based instruction and intercultural communication, authoring and editing numerous works that shaped modern approaches to second language teaching. Among her best known titles is Developing Tomorrow's Foreign Language Teachers: Theory and Practice (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, 1993). Her earlier edited volume Languages for a Multicultural World in Transition (National Textbook Company, 1989) reflected her long standing commitment to connecting language, culture, and pedagogy.

In one of her 1990 papers, "Communication, Culture, and the Curriculum", she wrote: "Intercultural competence grows not from travel or textbooks alone, but from the steady effort to understand and be understood." That perspective captured the guiding principle of her personal and professional life: education as the deliberate and empathetic work of building understanding across linguistic and cultural boundaries.

Colleagues in the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the broader academic community recognized Dr. Guntermann as a leader in communicative language teaching and teacher preparation. Her influence continues in the programs and textbooks she helped design, and in the countless educators who studied under her direction at ASU.

Beyond her scholarship, Gail was renowned for her warmth, humility, wit, and commitment to intellectual honesty. She challenged her students and peers not just to learn a language, but to understand the world that language inhabits. Those who worked with her recall a professor who treated everyone-from first year undergraduates to visiting scholars-with authentic respect and curiosity.

In retirement, Gail continued to advocate for cross cultural education and shared her love of Spanish language and Latin American culture through community outreach and mentoring younger educators. She also found great joy in travel, sweet treats, and great conversations over even better food.

She is survived by loving family members, devoted friends, and former students who carry forward her teachings, and a lasting legacy within the field of language education.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 am on February 4, 2026, held at the Best Funeral Services North Central Chapel, located at 501 E. Dunlap Avenue, Phoenix AZ, 85020.

Her legacy endures not only through her students and publications but also through the Gail Guntermann Professional Development Fellowship Award, established by the Arizona Language Association to support continuing education for K-12 world language teachers. In lieu of flowers, her family request donations to her endowment with the Arizona Language association (https://arizonalanguageassociation.wildapricot.org/Awards).

Gail was a wonderful colleague and a loyal friend. She was incredibly dedicated to her students and to preparing new language teachers for the field. I´ve known Gail since I came to ASU in 1987. She was a friend and a mentor. We walked on Sundays, roomed at conferences, had dinners and lunches together. She was my daughter´s Tia Gail. The world has lost a lovely person. Smile down on us, Gail. We will miss you.
