A native of McDowell County, Charlotte was born September 18, 1939 to the late Clarence Poteat and Alice Lewis Poteat.

Charlotte was a member of First Baptist Church of Marion. She enjoyed being a part of the McDowell Dance Club and will be remembered as a loving mother and nana. Her world revolved around her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Dean Hughes; her daughter, Beth Hughes Garrett; and her siblings, Monyon Poteat, Ray Poteat, Robert “Pug” Poteat; and Vicki Pool.

She is survived by her son, Greg Hughes (Amy); son-in-law, Thomas Garrett; four grandchildren, Camryn DeLuca (John), Brittany Hughes, Brooke Garrett, and Seth Hughes; and numerous nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.

The family would like to thank the staff at Mountain Ridge Wellness Center and the staff at Autumn Care for the excellent care they provided for the past few years. Additionally, we would like to thank hospice at CarePartners, especially Nurse Tonia Harris, for her grace and compassion in Nana’s final days. Memorial contributions may be made to the McDowell County Schools Endowment Fund.
