Charlotte J. Sweeney (née Hennes), 99, a long-time resident of Wheeling and Palatine, IL, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025. Charlotte, or Shirl as she was known, was preceded in death by her loving husband Vincent in 1981. Devoted mother to Mary Pat (William) Devereux, Dennis (Shirley Conley), Joseph (Kathleen), James (Cindy), Charles, William (Hansine), Gregg (Susan), and Vincent Jr. (Ann). Treasured grandma to 29, proud great grandma to 15, and adored sister to seven siblings, who all preceded her in death.

Shirl was the youngest of 8 children born to Helena and Joseph Hennes in Jordan Minnesota. Growing up with 6 older brothers and a sister, Shirl loved the outdoors and excelled in sports, softball in particular. As an adult, she was an avid bowler, golfer and card player and she also enjoyed watching sports, especially her beloved White Sox. Living on a farm during the Depression ingrained a practical frugality in Shirl but she was generous with her time and spirit, delivering meals to the homebound and communion to the sick. A devout Catholic, family was Shirl's most cherished accomplishment. She always made time for her children and grandchildren, playing cards, attending sports and performances, or just listening to what they had to say. Shirl was a great listener, had a wonderful sense of humor, but tolerated no nonsense. She will be dearly missed but her legacy of love, faith, strength and acceptance will live on through all those she touched during her long, wonderful life.
