Chef Wrobbel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service from May 3 to May 5, 2025.
Chef John Wrobbel, age 70, a 30-year resident of Put-in-Bay, passed away unexpectedly on April 27, 2025. Born on March 25th, 1955, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, to John James and Eleanor (née Hasho) Wrobbel, Chef John lived a life rich in flavor, creativity, and love.
A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Chef John was an exceptional chef whose talents graced numerous kitchens and delighted countless palates. From his early days in fine dining to cooking for dignitaries-including President George W. Bush-and starring in a "how-to" TV show for Kroger, Chef John's passion for food and people shined brightly. He also served as a chef at the esteemed Detroit Athletic Club and brought that same high standard of excellence to everything he did.
Before moving to Put-in-Bay, he owned a beloved ice cream shop in Port Clinton, where he served sweet treats with a side of laughter and warmth, always welcoming guests with his signature charm and wit.
He first came to the island to work at Tipper's. Throughout his years on the island, he contributed his culinary talents to the Winterbar, the Keys, Topsy Turvey's, and Mossbacks. He collaborated with island chefs such as Woody Widmar, Gary Hartzel and Marie Schroeder, among many others. Beyond restaurant work, he frequently catered private events and generously volunteered his time and skills for numerous Fire Department fundraisers, Harvest Dinners, and Senior Lunches.
Chef John had a knack for turning the ordinary into something special-whether it was a day at the county fair, browsing flea markets, or baking one of his famously sugar-laden pies. He loved to travel, fish, and most of all, spend time with his grandchildren, who brought him endless joy.
Chef John is survived by his loving daughters: Roberta (Joe) Scarpelli (PIBHS Class of 2003) of Put-in-Bay, Amanda (Justin) Solkiewicz of LaGrange, and Lisa Wrobbel (PIBHS Class of 2010) of Put-in-Bay; as well as his grandchildren: Aiden and Melanie Solkiewicz, and Harper, Rocco, and Sage Scarpelli. He is also survived by his sisters Christine (Jim) Heidisch and Lynda Redmon, both of Florida.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Melanie (nee: Kalwarczyk) Wrobbel who passed away in 1999.
His loss leaves a deep void in the hearts of his family and all who had the privilege to know him.
Arrangements are entrusted to Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Online condolences and shared memories may be left at www.burrservice.com.
Chef John's legacy lives on in the meals he created, the laughter he inspired, and the love he gave so freely.
Private Services were held.
