Cheng Shun Yuan, passed away peacefully on Dec 11, 2024 at the age of 95. He was a loving, studious and caring person. Born in Shandong, China into a family of poverty, he spent his youth going from city to city in China during World War 2 with his father trying to make a living. His military uncle was entrusted to take care of him by the time he was to enter high school, and just as the Japanese invasion was in full intensity, he decided to enlist in the Chinese Army to help the war efforts. He went with the troops to Taiwan as the communist took over China. This would mark the first of many significant change of scenery in his life as he would be separated from the rest of the family who stayed behind in China. During his time in the Army he would join in successfully defending Kinmen from communist invasion and witnessed the biggest victory by the Nationalist Army against the Red Army of communist China and his regiment was dubbed the Bears of Kinmen for their heroic efforts. The victory would secure peace for Taiwan to this day as the communists realized how difficult it was to mount an attack across the ocean. It was during this period he took English lessons, and by being studious and listening to English lessons on the radio he became proficient enough to be sent to the US mainland for training as communications officer. He was introduced to and married his wife by friends in the military, soon after came the birth of a son and a daughter.
He would retire from military life and decided on a new challenge in his life marking yet another significant change as he entered the furniture business. He had always dreamed of going to America and making a better life for the family. It started with learning English and eventually with the help of US military friends he was able to establish his own store in Guam and begin immigration procedures for the whole family. The time spent on Guam was relatively short but highly productive as it laid the groundworks for the move to the mainland USA. He saw the future potential of Silicon Valley which at the time was just in its infancy, so he moved the family to San Jose, CA. His vision proved quite extraordinary as the valley saw explosive growth soon after and is what provided for the family to grow and prosper in America. His business was the embodiment of the quintessential American dream, through hard work and perseverance he was able to achieve his vision and live out a dream.
He will be fondly remembered as a loving, caring and firm in his beliefs person. He enjoyed listening to music with Teresa Teng as one of his favorite singer; he also can cook and enjoyed watching ballgames
and spending time with family. He enjoyed many activities such as drawing, playing the Zither and writing Chinese calligraphy during his retirement years. He also remained studious as he used the computer and iPhone to communicate with friends and family and would read the local Chinese language newspaper daily. He lived a colorful and eventful life even though it was during a tumultuous time in history but he successfully guided the family through the numerous challenges and enjoyed a wonderfully fruitful life.
