It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Chester E. Hagenbarth, 89. He was born and raised in Vineland, NJ and spent his retirement years in Carlisle, PA. Born in 1936, to Chester and Susan (Scarpa) Hagenbarth, Chet grew up in Vineland where he attended Sacred Heart High School. Chet was the oldest brother to his three siblings, Carol (Ogren) Miller, Susan (Ogren) Smith, and Arthur Ogren, Jr. After High School, Chet attended Drexel University and studied Civil Engineering on an ROTC Scholarship. While at Drexel, Chester met his wife Diane at a mixer, and they enjoyed 62 years of marriage. After college, Chester was stationed at Fort Dix army base where he served his country and settled in Vineland, NJ to raise his loving family. Chet Jr. was born at Fort Dix and was later followed by daughters Cheryl and Lee Ann. He joined the family business, Ogren Construction, where he worked until 2006.
He was an avid fly fisherman and conservationist. Chet served on the Board of the Central Pennsylvania Conservancy and was President of the Cumberland Valley Trout Unlimited where he received the honor of the Golden Trout Award for bringing his love of the outdoors to at-risk youth through Street to Streams and to veterans with the Wounded Warrior Project. He also served as a member of the Newcomb Hospital Board of Directors along with being significantly involved in Vineland youth sports and the local Jaycees.
Chet enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up and was their biggest fan at all their sporting events, recitals, and shows. He traveled all over the east coast to watch their events from youth, high school through college.
He took after his father as an amazing baseball player and shared his love of the game by volunteering to coach youth baseball and softball. He lost his father at an early age and grew up on a farm in Vineland with his Italian mom until she remarried. Chet became the oldest of four siblings Carol, Susan, and Arthur, whom he cherished.
He is survived by his children Chester E. Hagenbarth Jr. and his wife Gwen (Elbeuf)Hagenbarth, and Lee Ann (Hagenbarth) Murray and her husband Andy. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Colin Hagenbarth and his wife Brittany, Kristin (Hagenbarth) Bowers and her husband Ricky, Jack and Katherine Murray, and great-grandchildren Rebecca, Caleb, and Julian. He was predeceased by his parents, Chester Hagenbarth, Arthur and Susan Ogren; his wife Diane (Dougherty) Hagenbarth; his daughter, Cheryl Ann Hagenbarth, and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral home visitations will be held on Sunday, October 26th from 6pm to 8pm and again on Monday morning, October 27th from 10am to 11am at Rone Funeral Service, 1110 East Chestnut Avenue, Vineland, NJ.
