Fort Kent & Van Buren--- Chih-Kuang “Chih” Tao passed away peacefully on March 24, 2026, at Cary Medical Center, surrounded by the love of his devoted caregivers and family.

Chih was born on May 12, 1963, in Taipei, Taiwan, to Nien Tzu (Hong) Tao and Zui-Sun Tao. Raised at 9 High Street in Fort Kent, he grew up alongside his four siblings in a community that embraced and cared for him with compassion and kindness. Living with Down syndrome, Chih was cherished for his joyful spirit and the deep connections he formed with those around him.

A lifelong resident of Northern Aroostook County, Chih touched the lives of many. He attended Fort Kent schools and spent his adult years participating in Northern Aroostook Alternatives in Van Buren, where he built lasting friendships and was supported by dedicated caregivers. For the past 15 years, he was lovingly cared for at Sheila Soucy House, where he benefited greatly from the compassion and commitment of Sheila Soucy, Dustin Lausier, and the entire care team.

He is survived by his loving mother, Nien Tzu Tao of Bedford, MA; his siblings, May Lin Tao of Los Angeles, CA; Alexandra Tao of Chelmsford, MA; Benjamin Tao of Chicago, IL; and Joyce Tao of Lancaster, CA, all of whom were formerly long-time residents of Fort Kent.

He was predeceased by his father, Dr. Zui-Sun Tao, a longtime Fort Kent resident and devoted physician at Northern Maine Medical Center, who passed away in 1992.

Chih will be remembered as a spirited and loving person who brought joy to all who knew him. His warmth, resilience, and bright presence will be deeply missed.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of Chih’s family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lajoie-Daigle Funeral Home. Online condolences may be shared at www.lajoiefuneralhome.com
