Chip Miller Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Midwest Cremation & Funeral Services, LLC - Springfield on Sep. 23, 2025.
Shirley "Chip" Elton Miller III, age 79, passed away on September 19, 2025, in Springfield, Missouri. Born on September 13, 1946, in Springfield, he remained a lifelong resident of the city he cherished. Chip attended Drury College before being called to serve his country in the United States Army. From 1969 to 1971, he completed two tours in Vietnam as a Specialist 5. During his service, he was assigned to the APG Morale and Welfare Division and received several awards and medals in recognition of his contributions. His time in the military left a lasting impact and reflected his deep sense of duty and honor.

Following his return home, Chip embraced a life centered on kindness and connection. He was known for his warmth and hospitality, always making others feel welcome. Whether spending time with his beloved dogs, fishing on a lake, or preparing meals for friends and loved ones, he found joy in life's simple pleasures and shared them generously.

Chip is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon Miller of 41 years; stepdaughter, Stephanie Dunlap and husband John Dunlap; daughter in law, Sidney Messick; grandchildren, Natalie Dunlap, Colton Messick, Rylan Messick and wife Anyston Messick; great grandchildren, Presley and Kingsley Messick; brother, Jim Miller; niece, Margaux Wysong.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeanette and Shirley Elton Miller Jr.; stepson, Darren Messick; and niece, Keely Miller.

Chip will have a military service and burial in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery surrounded by close family and friends at 2:00pm on Friday, October 17, 2025.

May the memory of Shirley "Chip" Miller III bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a lasting reminder of a life lived with courage and compassion.
