Choudary Kavuri Obituary

Choudary Venkatappaiah Kavuri

March 24, 1951 - January 1, 2025

Dr. Choudary V. Kavuri, 73, a beloved individual and dedicated psychiatrist, passed away peacefully in Greensboro, NC, on January 1, 2025, following a long battle with multiple illnesses. His passing leaves behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and unwavering love for his family and community.

Born on March 24th, 1951, in Ponnur, Andhra Pradesh, India, to parents Raghavaiah Choudary and Anasuya Devi Kavuri. After graduating from Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, India, in 1978, he married his devoted wife of 44 years, Sunitha Kavuri (Surapaneni). That same year, he began a new chapter by moving to the United States, where he completed his medical training at Southern Illinois University.

Dr. Kavuri established his psychiatry practice in Decatur, IL, where he served his community for over 35 years while raising his three children. His professional life was marked by a deep commitment to helping those often overlooked by society, approaching his work with gentle understanding and compassion. While soft-spoken with his patients, he was known for his gregarious nature in his personal life, always ready with a captivating story or entertaining anecdote. Those who knew him well always said, "His bark was worse than his bite," as he had an infinite soft spot for those he loved.

A vibrant person who treasured life's moments both big and small and despite his illnesses, Dr. Kavuri never missed an important event in the lives of his loved ones. His presence was a constant source of support and joy for his family and friends. He enjoyed a love of music, movies, playing cards with friends, and collecting watches. Lately, his greatest joy was playing with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sunitha Kavuri; his two children, Rohit Roy (Cassandra) Kavuri and Sirisha (Keertan) Reddy; his three sisters, Sucharitha Kotha, Subhada Alla and Sunanda Nannapaneni; and his four grandchildren, Arya Rani Reddy, Arjun Rahul Reddy, Amaya Rani Reddy, and Dev River Kavuri. He was also a doting uncle to his many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raghavaiah Choudary Kavuri and Anasuya Devi Kavuri; his sister, Sudheera Kavuri; his brother, Venkateswara Rao Kavuri; and his son, Rahul Dev Kavuri.

Dr. Kavuri's legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched as a physician, the memories he created as a storyteller and friend, and most importantly, through the boundless love he shared as a husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. His dedication to family, his professional commitment to helping others, and his joy in life's simple pleasures will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A visitation will be held on January 4, 2025, at 8 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m., at Forbis & Dick Funeral Service, 5926 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410.

My condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Kavuri. I worked with Dr. Kavuri for several years. He was such a great guy, great humor, even those nights I had to call him a 2 am. He will truly be missed.

I randomly ran across this looking through the recent local obituaries. Dr. Kavuri was my doctor when I was in my teens and early 20´s and struggling with mental illness. He was the only psychiatrist I ever felt heard by and I´ve always remembered that. He treated me more like a person rather than a patient and that made a big impact and difference. I´m sorry to hear of the loss, but I rest assured he´s in an amazing state and place now . Thank you for your service to those marginalized and not as easily understood. I will always be grateful.

I worked with Dr Kavuri on 6400 at DMH. I really liked him. He never minded being called about his patients, even in the middle of the night. He gave me some clove candy out of his office when I had a terrible toothache. He said whatever he had in his office was open to any of us nurses. Such a kind man. Condolences to his family.
