Chrissy Amphlett Obituary
"Christine Joy Amphlett succumbed to the effects of breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, diseases she vigorously fought with exceptional bravery and dignity," her musician husband Charley Drayton said in a statement.
"Chrissy's light burns so very brightly. Hers was a life of passion and creativity. She always lived it to the fullest. With her force of character and vocal strength, she paved the way for strong, sexy, outspoken women," he said.
Amphlett was an icon of Australian music renowned for her distinctive singing voice as well as edgy stage performances clad in school uniforms and fishnet stockings.
She was born on Oct. 25, 1959, in Geelong city in Victoria state, cousin of 1960s Australian pop star Patricia Amphlett, known as "Little Pattie," who was at her New York bedside on Sunday.
Amphlett met musician Mark McEntee at a concert at the Sydney Opera House in 1980 and the pair formed the Divinyls.
The band released six albums between 1982 and 1996, peaking in 1991 with the success of the single "I Touch Myself," which reached No. 1 in Australia, No. 4 in the United States and No. 10 in Britain.
The band reformed briefly in 2006. Amphlett announced in 2007 that she had multiple sclerosis and in 2010 that she had cancer.
Amphlett was also an actress who made her movie debut in the 1982 Australian film "Monkey Grip," which featured several Divinyls tracks.
She later played Russell Crowe's mother in the Australian stage production of the musical "Blood Brothers."
Crowe sent a Twitter message after Amphlett's death.
"Dear Chrissie, The last time I saw you was in the Botanic Gardens, loving life and reciting verse. That's how I 'll remember you, your boy, R," it said.

I have been looking through some Youtube videos and remembering the time i saw Divinyls in Perth in approximately 1998.
Miss Amplett you were an extraordinary talent. In my opinion you are Australias greatest female singer.

I hope chrissys husband reads these. But ive been watching ur live concerts of u and her and cry when i would watch her look at u and how u would give her a huge smile. Everyone in the world misses ur wife. Especially me! Its gonna b Happy New Years and i know its hard for u to not have her here. But trust me shes there!! I plan to go to Amphlett Lana when i get well enough. My best friends are up there and will go to her Lane to take pics of it for me. Chrissy we all wish we could see and here your beutiful voice and soul. But im constantly watching her when she was young to her last performance called Summer Song. Which made me cry! Those of u who have never seen Chrissy on stage how she rocked it and how her beautiful soul was just wonderful to watch. U cant keep ur eyes off of her. She was the show. She was Divinyls. So those of u who have their albums cassettes or CD 's go to ur phone or computers and watch her in concert!!! U will know what i mean. I saw her once in concert and i was actually getting shoved and pushed by many men that Chrissy saw this while she was performing and actually reached out her hand to me and pulled me closer to the stage. U should have seen the looks on all the men who werent very nice. Chrissy i alwYs rememberd that. U have touch many hearts. Especially mine. I also wanted to say that no one held their mic the way she did and she even made that look very sexy. Just like her. I hope when its my turn to go i will b front row at your concert. So as of now Chrissy give them hell up there!!!! Love ya

I only saw you live one time, Pasadena CA., USA, in 1983 or '84. It was truly an unforgettable performance by an exceptional performer. Both my wife and I were stunned and exhilarated and die hard Divinyls fans thereafter. What kept me such a loyal fan over the years however were the songs, the music. when you sit down and listen, you realize what exceptional songwriters you and Mark McEntee truly were. How really underrated you were here in the US. I can't tell you how many times I've been with friends with Divinyls blaring out of a set of speakers and have them say who is that?! And I'm talking from Desperate to diVINYLS (sadly Underworld wasn't released here). Then of course came your accomplishments on the musical stage. Although with out question you belong to Australia, you are in my mind one of the greatest women in rock worldwide for really too many reasons to state here. Thanks Chrissy Amphlett. God keep you and comfort and bless your family and friends.

You gave young girls & women another option for their identities. You gave us permission to be strong, opiniated women when back in the 80's it wasn't always this way. Despite the pressures of an industry that requires women to conform to a stero-type to succeed, you stayed true to yourself and managed to succeed.
