Christina "Tina" Schavey
November 20, 1945 - October 21, 2024
Christina "Tina" (Demetral) Schavey, of Holly, Michigan, formerly of Holmes Beach, Florida, passed away on October 21, 2024 surrounded by her loved ones. Tina was born on November 20, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Christopher Peter Demetral and Louise Demetral (Anthos). She was the beloved wife of Dennis Rodney Schavey, who preceded her in death, and was previously married to the late Kenneth Eugene Lazarowicz. Tina is survived by her daughter, Catherine Kawahata (Lazarowicz), her dear brother Theodore Demetral and his wife Carol (Essian), her granddaughter Lily Kawahata, her sister-in-law Karen Schavey, her sister Catherine Carney, and two stepdaughters, Christina Ditmar and Deborah Barclay. Tina attended Annunciation High School in Detroit, worked for Ex-Cell-O Corporation and Blue Cross of Michigan, and later was a member of the Key Royale Club and proprietor of The Mutiny Inn, Anna Maria Island.
Tina was a woman who loved strongly and fiercely protected those that she loved. This was clearest in her love and devotion to her husband, Dennis, a force which gave her joy and meaning throughout her life. Her firm faith that she would be reunited with Dennis in Heaven sustained her through a difficult struggle with cancer and gave her peace at the end.
During her life, Tina remained in close touch with her brother Ted, his wife Carol, and Dennis' sister Karen, and they in turn were always there for her. She was a daily source of love and guidance to her daughter, Cathy, despite frequently being separated by thousands of miles, and was a wise and loving grandmother to Lily, who inherited her sense of humor and independent streak. She will be sorely missed.
Wherever Tina went, she made deep and lasting friendships, from her youth in Detroit, her many years on Anna Maria Island, and her homecoming to Holly, MI. She was always ready to listen, quick with a joke or a comeback, and prepared to go the extra mile if a friend needed help. In recent years Tina was especially moved by the young adults that she saw around her working so hard to navigate life's challenges and tried in every way she could to offer her help. In return, she was blessed with the love and support of so many, for which her family is truly grateful.
A celebration of life is planned for a later date. Memorial donations may be sent to the Children's Tumor Foundation at CTF.org or Mail Code: 6895, P.O. Box 7247, Philadelphia, PA 19170-0001.
