Christopher DeVries Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carnes Funeral Home - Texas City on Nov. 17, 2025.
Christopher Alan DeVries, loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend to so many, passed away at MD Anderson Cancer Center in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 13th, 2025. He was surrounded by love and family as he completed his short battle against pancreatic cancer. He was born on December 19th, 1968, in Huntsville TX to loving parents Richard Don DeVries and Laura Price DeVries, but Galveston, TX was his home.

Chris graduated from Ball High School in Galveston, TX in 1987. He went on to attend Texas A&M University in College Station, graduating from the Mays Business School with a BBA in 1991 and his MBA in 1993. It is there he met the love of his life, Amanda Murray DeVries, whom he married in 1994 and embarked on a journey of building an incredible life together. They recently celebrated 31 years of a beautiful marriage and a love like no other.

Chris loved being a father, with his greatest joy in life being his two sons, Zachary and Mason. From the time the boys were young he instilled the love of camping. Purchasing a little travel trailer when the boys were very young, and then upgrading to his dream RV, many of the families' favorite memories were made throughout the years of camping at Garner State Park, Brazos Bend, Big Bend, and every state park across Texas.

Following college, Chris worked in the banking industry in the trust department for Frost National Bank in Galveston, TX, as well as First National Bank of Commerce in Alexandria, Louisiana. He furthered his career working alongside dear friends Bob and Debbie Sonnen at Rebels and Nickels in Houston, Tx. After a brief time in marketing for Compaq Computer Corporation, an opportunity opened and with his immense business acumen and expertise, he joined his father in 2002 in purchasing and managing Standard Steel Supply, Inc. in Texas City, TX. Together, they have successfully owned and operated Standard Steel Supply, Inc. for the past 23 years.

With his servant heart, Chris was a pillar in the community and was honored to serve in any capacity. He was a long-standing member and leader in the Texas City-La Marque Chamber of Commerce, having served on the board in various roles, including Chairman. Chris was also proudly involved and held many leadership positions on several other boards throughout his years including The Rotary Club of Texas City, The Texas City ISD Foundation for the Future, The College of the Mainland Foundation, The advisory board of AMOCO FCU, Mainland United Way, Boy Scouts of America, and many others. Volunteering was an important part of Chris's life and he genuinely believed in the ability of one person to have an influence, no matter how small it may be.

Chris spent his entire life making memories with family and friends. Whether it was the DAWB Annual Ski trip, a weekend visit at a friend's house or just a quick passing word somewhere, he valued all his friends and enjoyed any chance he had to spend with them. He exemplified living life to the fullest, making sure to celebrate every holiday, birthday, or occasion, no matter how big or small.

Chris absolutely loved the game of golf. Catching the bug early in his youth and working at the Galveston Country Club just to be able to play, golf quickly became a lifetime sport for him. He made numerous cherished friendships on the course, primarily Galveston Country Club and South Shore Harbour Country Club. In the last several years He and Amanda enjoyed travelling to beautiful locations and playing outstanding golf courses.

Chris was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was the absolute best Uncle, Son, Brother, Nephew, Cousin, and friend to so many. He is survived by his incredible wife, Amanda Murray DeVries of League City, TX, his two cherished sons, Zachary and Mason DeVries of League City, TX, his parents, mother, Laura Price and husband Louis Buehn of Fredericksburg, TX, father, Richard DeVries and wife Denise, of Galveston, TX, his sister Julie DeVries Stansell and husband Stuart of Grapevine, TX, along with her children, Braeden Templin, Callie and Madelyn Stansell, and his first and only grandchild, Emma DeVries, daughter of Zachary, who he cherished so much, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends and co-workers. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry DeVries and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Price, of Galveston, TX, as well as by his mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William B. Murray of Dickinson, TX.

He will be deeply missed by many, and his profound legacy will be felt and remembered for generations.

The DeVries family extends special gratitude to the outpouring of support from the community, countless friends, and people who have supported them throughout this entire process, as well as the staff and doctors at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Chris was truly a Beautiful person. I remember him as a neighbor at a very young age. His parents so loving of their kids. A Hallmark Family in my eyes. What I like most about this family is that they are grounded and rooted in what really matters in life ..first and foremost Love of God, Love of Family, and Love of Friends. I always remember humility and everything they did was solid but simple. Built to last. A firm foundation. Chris made an impact on my life because of his wonderful parents. I pray that Chris is all of our Angels up in Heaven and I truly hope his family... his wife and especially his kids and grandkids know just how lucky they are to have had this man in their lives. God Bless Chris in Heaven. I am truly sorry for your loss. Deuteronomy 28:6
