Christopher Robbin Smith, Sr., was born on July 6, 1972 to James and Ann (Ladwig) Smith in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Growing up, Chris moved with his family to various towns in Iowa and Alaska and attended school, later completing his GED. While growing up in Juneau, Alaska, Chris met Leslie Knapp. The couple was married at the Assembly of God Church in Juneau. They first made their home in Wrangell, Alaska, then the Luverne, Minnesota area, and finally settled in Garretson, South Dakota. They were blessed with two sons, Christopher and Riley. Chris and Leslie later divorced. Chris worked for the City of Sioux Falls, South Dakota in the street maintenance department. In addition, he also used his skill of welding for various people in the area for several years. He later began a relationship with Tammi Kremin, whom he cherished. In 2020, Chris moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa. On Saturday, May 10, 2025, Chris died unexpectedly from natural causes at his home at the age of 52 years, ten months and four days.
Chris was an adventurer at heart and found peace and excitement spending time in the great outdoors, whether hiking, fishing, camping or hunting. He especially enjoyed music, movies, tinkering and fixing things, but most importantly family time. Chris had charisma. He was funny and quick-witted, possessing an infectious laugh. He was kind-hearted, loyal, resilient, hardworking, and incredibly generous. He was deeply proud of his sons and grandchildren, family being the most important to him.
Chris is lovingly survived by his two sons, Christopher (Stephanie) Smith of Rock Rapids, and Riley Smith of Rock Rapids; five grandchildren, Jocelyn, Kale, Eliana, Laviah, and Avery; mother, Ann Smith of Rock Rapids; partner, Tammi Kremin; and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, James Smith.
