A Tribute to Chris - The Heart of Star Pizza
From the time I was a young boy in the Acre, barely able to see over the counter, Star Pizza was more than just a restaurant-it was a ritual, a tradition, and a place of warmth. No matter the day, no matter the circumstances, every time my father, Charles, and I walked through that door, Chris greeted us with a smile that could brighten even the dullest of afternoons.
Chris was more than a business owner. He was an anchor in the community, a man whose generosity went far beyond pizza and fries. He spoke to my father in Greek, their conversations weaving through the air as he worked tirelessly behind the counter, tossing pizzas into the oven with the precision of an artist. And for me, as a kid eager to absorb everything, Chris would take the time to teach me a few Greek words-a small but meaningful gesture that showed his kindness extended far beyond his craft.
It became tradition. After a day at North Common-whether playing baseball, riding my bike, splashing in the pool, or some combination of the three-my father and I would end our day at Star Pizza. Always pizza. Always fries. And always, Chris ensuring that we were loaded up with more fries than we could possibly handle! It wasn´t just about feeding people; it was about making them feel welcome, appreciated, and cared for.
As I grew older, the tradition carried on. When my father passed away, I found myself still drawn to Star Pizza, continuing the ritual in my teenage years, stopping by after long bike rides downtown or another day spent at North Common. And when I eventually had sons of my own, there was no question-I would bring them to Star Pizza, where Chris, alongside his brother George, carried on that same amazing work ethic, that same smile, and that same genuine care for others.
Chris didn´t just serve food. He served people-with dignity, kindness, and generosity. He made sure no one left hungry, whether by slipping someone an extra slice, giving out a discount, or offering a job to someone who needed it. He never looked away when someone was struggling; he found ways to help, always. That was his nature.
I can still picture him in his element-the heat of the kitchen, the oven, the large fan cooling the restaurant, his hands moving swiftly, cutting pizzas with precision as I watched from the counter, completely in awe.
And through all these years, Chris remained a constant-asking about my brothers, checking in on my family, teaching my children Greek just as he had taught me. His kindness was effortless, his generosity boundless, his presence irreplaceable.
Chris didn´t just serve thousands of customers. He shaped thousands of lives-mine included. He taught me the power of compassion, the value of generosity, and how to truly care for people. His legacy isn´t just in the pizzas he made, but in the lessons he left behind.
Even now, whenever my family sits down for pizza, his name comes up. His memory lingers-not just in the flavors, but in the warmth he gave to so many.
Chris, you were loved. You were appreciated. And you will never be forgotten. You weren´t just a restaurant owner; you were a cornerstone of the community, a friend, a teacher, and a presence that made our world better.
You will be missed. You will be remembered. And you will always be loved.
