Chung Hui Woods, affectionately known as ‘June’ to her family, passed away on February 14, 2026. She was ninety-six.

Born on July 1, 1929, in Gwangju, Korea, Chung lived a long and remarkable life marked by resilience, love, and devotion to her family. She and her husband, Donald R. Woods, met in Korea while he was serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. They married on February 15, 1956. In November 1967, Chung immigrated to the United States, where together they built a beautiful family and a lifetime of cherished memories.

Chung’s life was a testament to courage—from navigating the challenges of post war Korea to beginning a new chapter in the United States, she faced every stage of her journey with quiet strength, resilience, and grace. She had a comforting presence that made everyone around her feel seen, welcomed, and cared for.

Chung is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald R. Woods, her son, Thomas Phillips, and her daughter in law, Mable Woods. Though their absence was deeply felt, their memories remained a constant source of strength and comfort to her. She is lovingly survived by her children, Donald Woods Jr., and Tonya Woods Grimes (Michael), who were devoted to her throughout her long life. Chung took immense pride in her grandchildren, Domonique Woods and Sarai Shelton, whose laughter and company brought her endless joy.

Chung was an avid reader and a phenomenal cook who expressed her love through every meal she prepared. She delighted in traveling and exploring new places, always guided by her remarkable sense of direction. Long before GPS existed, she was the family navigator. Her creativity knew no bounds; she sewed, made pottery, knitted, and crocheted with both skill and joy, and she painted beautifully as another expression of her artistry. Music filled her home and her spirit, especially classical pieces, Korean folk songs and the comforting melodies of The Carpenters. Her favorite color, sage green, reflected her calm, gentle nature.

Family and friends are invited to visit Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N Canton Rd., Akron, OH 44305 on Saturday, February 21st from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. A committal service will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, where Chung will be laid to rest.
