Clara Freeney Obituary
On Saturday, May 11, 2024, our dear mother, Mrs. Clara L. Freeney, passed away quietly surrounded by her family in the Atlanta, Georgia area. She was 89 years old. Born as an only child to Julia Mae Fisher and Charlie Byrd in Apalachicola, Florida, she attended the local schools there, and relocated to Jacksonville, Florida in the 1950s. Eventually, she met and married a handsome, former Army man, Frazier Freeney, and together they raised five children until his death in 1976. Mrs. Freeney never remarried, and was a life-long resident of Jacksonville, having lived there for nearly 70 years.
A woman of great faith, Mrs. Freeney could be seen early in the morning each and every day silently praying and reading her Bible. She always attended Sunday church services and was an active member at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church where she served for many years on the usher board. In the last ten years of her life, she attended Greater Macedonia Baptist Church and The Power of the Holy Ghost Church which was pastored by her son, the late Bishop Delano K. Freeney, Sr.
Mrs. Freeney worked very diligently throughout her life and was focused on making a caring and comfortable home for her family. She worked as a custodian for the Duval County School Board for many years, and retired from Baptist Hospital in the early 2000s. She very proudly achieved her life-long dream of homeownership right before retirement. Fiercely independent, she loved to stand on her own two feet, and encouraged us all to do the same. She often used to say, "Mama may have, papa may have, but God bless the child that's got his own".
Mrs. Freeney outlived her parents, husband, and three of her five children, Cleveland McClory, Jr. (1982), Lynette Young (2020), and Delano K. Freeney, Sr. (2023). She leaves to mourn her passing, two daughters, Julie L. Joshua (Kenrick Joshua) and Noel Deller (Daniel Deller); grandchildren, Danielle Young, Cleveland McClory, III, Julie Ann Joshua (Baby Jue), Kenrick Joshua, Jr., Kendi Joshua, Monique Freeney, Marlena Ellis, Delano K. Freeney, Jr., Patrice Riggins, Kenny Freeney, Raymond Freeney; Daniel Deller, Jr. and David Deller; Cousins Louise Kellow and Larry Joseph; daughters-in-law, Carol Freeney and Kimberly Easterly; and a host of great and great-great grandchildren, other relatives and close friends.
