Clarence "Sonny" Frederick Head, Jr, age 90, of Mount Carroll, IL, previously of Milan and Rock Island, IL passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport, IL. A committal service with military rites accorded by the Milan American Legion will be held at 11 am Friday, October 28, 2022, at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery Pavillion, Rock Island, IL. A luncheon will follow the service at the Milan American Legion Post #569, 515 1st Ave W, Milan, IL 61264. If you plan on attending the service, we will be meeting at 10:30 a.m. at the Stoney Creek Hotel parking lot, 101 18th St, Moline, and we will process into the cemetery at 10:45 a.m.
Sonny was born May 26, 1932, in Rock Island, the son of Clarence and Gwendolyn (Smith) Head, Sr. Clarence, fondly known as "Sonny", attended school in Rock Island. He joined the U.S. Army attaining the rank of Sergeant during the Korean War, receiving the Silver Star Medal for valor. He married Sally Ann Carel in May 1958, together they had three children, Randy, Cindy and Kerry.
Sonny worked in construction with his brother-in-law and father-in-law for many years. He also worked in maintenance for the Rock Island School system. He was a fan of Nascar and his hero was Dale Earnhardt, Sr. He enjoyed watching tennis and NFL football, rooting for the Bears. Sonny spent many mornings meeting his buddies for coffee at McDonald's in Milan, and later they gathered at the American Legion Post in Milan, where he had many good, lifelong friends. He enjoyed Sunday drives visiting family and his yearly trips to Texas to visit his sons. He was a member of the American Legion, Milan Post 569 and the Rock Island Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his sons, Randy (Judy) of Red Oak, TX, Kerry (Veronica) of Rowlett, TX and his daughter Cindy (Scott) Sisler, of Mount Carroll; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Sonny will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Sonny is proceeded in death by his parents, Clarence F. Head and Gwendolyn (Smith) Head, his brother, Ronald Head of Spokane, WA, and his ex-wife, Sally Arnold.
