Clarence Hough Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home on Feb. 16, 2026.
Mr. Clarence Stewart Hough, 90, of Fayetteville, formerly of Coats, NC, entered eternal rest on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at home while being lovingly cared for by family.

Stewart was born in Harnett County on July 27, 1935, to Clarence R. and Mary S. Hough. Stewart was an only child but was lovingly welcomed into family of his first and only love, Gloria, which gave him three sisters. He met his beloved Gloria when he was just sixteen years old. He graduated from Coats High School in 1953.

He married Gloria on August 22, 1958, at Coats Baptist Church and went on to enjoy 67 years of marriage before she went home to be with Our Heavenly Father on November 10, 2025. The young couple settled in Fayetteville where Stewart continued his career with Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Co., later Sprint, which he began in 1956. He was then drafted into the United States Army twice which took them to Arizona and Texas for a short time. They returned to Fayetteville upon completion of his service to our nation and raised their family. Stewart retired from Sprint in 1997.

He was a true family man and always put his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren first. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life such as riding horses, hunting and fishing, joining his long-time coworkers from Sprint for breakfast at the Massey Hill Grill, and rooting for the UNC Tarheels basketball team along with Gloria.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Mary, loving wife Gloria, and great grandson, Andrew.

Left to cherish his memory his children, Lisa Harvell (Gary) and Lori Murphy (Brian); grandchildren, Lauren R. Murray (Ryan), Emily R. McLauchlin (Ross), and Ryan Murphy (Gwen); and great-grandchildren, Matthew, Luke, Logan, and Thomas. He is also survived by his sisters-in-love, Rosa Sharp, Mary Williams, and Becky Taylor (Earl), as well as nieces and nephews. He loved his family in the most special way, loved the Lord, and together he and Gloria now love us from Paradise.

The family wishes to extend gratitude and appreciation to Liberty HomeCare & Hospice, particularly Lauren, Maryette, Patricia, Heather, Brittany, Breanna, and Travis, for the support they provided that allowed us to care for him at home with dignity and love during his final months. His wife, Gloria, had been a supporter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for many years. If something mattered to her, it mattered to him. Therefore, if you wish to donate in their memory, the family would be honored. www.stjude.org
