Claude Coiner Obituary

Claude McCord "Buck" Coiner, Jr. passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025 in West Columbia, South Carolina. He was born on April 10, 1945 the son of Claude "Red" M. Coiner, Sr and Esther "Tillie" Miller Coiner. Buck grew up strong and healthy on his family's farm in Stuarts Draft right on Christian's Creek where he learned his strong work ethic and gentlemanly ways which he continued throughout his life, school years, military service and 36 year career at DuPont as the C Shift Lead Mechanic.

A 1965 graduate of Fishburne Military School, he then entered the U. S. Navy in 1966 serving on the USS Catawba. During this time the Catawba was deployed to recover and tow back USS Forestal after an explosion/fire onboard caused severe damage and deaths among its crew. He was proud to have been able to return his Waynesboro friend and Forestal casualty, David Smith, home to his family for burial. After completing his military service, he returned to school and obtained his certifications from Valley Vo-Tech as an Industrial, Electric & Mechanical licensed Journeyman required for the Maintenance Department at DuPont.

Buck loved music and played Baritone in the school bands and was a Cross-Country Runner for Fishburne Military School Track Team. In addition, he was a member of the Waynesboro Barber Shop Chorus for many years singing with a booming bass voice. He loved horses and horseback riding on his horse "Lady" while on the farm often standing in the saddle while "Lady" galloped through the fields. Other hobbies included hunting, fishing, riding his motorcycle and creating and maintaining beautiful vegetable gardens. Being fond of tinkering, he was a favorite among the neighborhood children who often left their broken, skateboards, and bikes etc. on their front porch for Buck to fix and have ready for play the next day.

On January 5, 1968 in Waynesboro during a heavy snowstorm, he married the love of his life, Suzie Hassett, on New Year's leave from the Navy while stationed in Mayport, Florida.

Survivors also include a beloved son, The Reverend Matthew M. Coiner and his wife Molly, two granddaughters whom he loved dearly, Hannah Noel Coiner and Aleah Beth Coiner all of Lexington, South Carolina. In addition, he is also survived by his brother-in-law, Fred H. Hassett & and; wife, Sandra, of Lexington and sister-in-law, Judith H. Johnson and husband, "Rusty" Johnson of Waynesboro as well as a niece, Katherine S. Long and 3 great nephews. Brian W. Hassett, Wm Anthony Johnson and Luke D. McKinney.

His faith was a large part of his life and studied the Bible faithfully everyday until his failing health due to Parkinson's and Vascular Dementia no longer made this possible. He was a gentleman to the end as well as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend.

At his request, he was cremated. A private inurnment service at Riverview Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Buck and Susie were members of our Sunday School Class at Wayne Hills Baptist Church for many years. Whenever Buck led the prayer, he would always ask Our Heavenly Father to save a place for him in heaven. I am sure HE did.

Our condolences to the family.
