Clayson Eugene Voncannon, age 90 of Asheboro, N.C. passed away at Penick Village of Southern Pines on Friday, October 18, 2024.
"Gene" was born September 26th, 1934 in Randolph County to the late Clayson and Ellie Voncannon. Gene graduated from Asheboro High School, class of 1952. He married the love of his life, Lottie Marie Cox in 1956, they enjoyed 68 years of marriage. Gene was a hard worker, starting out as a paperboy as a small boy, then on to McCrary right out of high school. He went on to work for Guilford Dairy (later Flavorich) for 20 years before transitioning to a floor technician at Energizer Batteries.
Gene loved to stay busy, after retirement he went back to work part-time for Randolph Bank (now Pinnacle) of Asheboro as a courier until caring for his home and farm became his full-time job.
Gene was an avid race fan and loved to reminisce about the races he attended over the years including the first ever Daytona 500. He and Lottie loved to travel in their RV, though many joked that Gene relished being on the road far more than arriving at the destination. He and Lottie spent many endless days at their cabin in the Virginia mountains as well. In the early days he spent time sitting in a tree-stand waiting for that special buck to walk by and later mowing the fields and then sitting in the rocking chair looking at a job well-done. Gene was the dutiful husband, caring for Lottie when her memory started failing until it became too much, then ensuring she had the best care at Penick Village.
Gene was a member of Bethel Friends Meeting (
Asheboro, NC) for nearly 70 years and the church was a major part of Gene's life. He and Lottie rarely missed a church function and the annual pig-pickin was a staple on his calendar.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife Lottie, now residing at Penick Village, daughter Laura Walden (Stamp) of Southern Pines, NC, son Lloyd Von Cannon (Ashley) of Matthews, NC, as well as five grandchildren Stampley Walden (Kendra), Cannon Walden, Maddie Mullinax (Daniel), Cole Von Cannon and Spencer Von Cannon and two great grand children Wesley and Crews.
Services will be held at Bethel Friends Meeting, Saturday October 26th, 2024 at 2:00pm. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to First Health Hospice Foundation, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374 by clicking the link below.
