ALBANY - Clayton George Carter died peacefully in his sleep on November 7, 2025, at the age of 95. A man of great faith, Clay was a devoted member of Loudonville Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. He served as an Elder of the church, Sunday School Director, Building and Grounds committee, and playing music at summer vacation bible school. He spent many summers as Director of Camp Hebron, a summer bible camp in the Adirondacks. He will forever be remembered as a beloved father, a musician of singular talent, playing the guitar, trumpet, banjo and harmonica, and as a great lover of classical music.
Born Clayton George Martin, he spent many of his formative years at the Fairview Home for Friendless Children in Watervliet, before being adopted by Ray Cecil Carter, whom he affectionately referred to as Pop. Clay went on to spend time in the military service, for the U.S. Army, participating in Project Moosehorn in the wilds of Alaska during the Korean War. He would later go on to graduate from Union College in Schenectady, and eventually dedicate over 30 years of his life to shaping young minds as an English teacher at Albany High School, as his adoptive father had done before him.
Clay was a gentle soul, a man of integrity, hardworking, and deeply loyal. Possessed of great intellect, he enjoyed spending his Sunday afternoons doing the New York Times crossword puzzle in pen instead of pencil. After dinner conversations were always filled with bad puns and equally good humor, traits that have been passed on to his loving family and close friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Teresa Carter of Latham, N.Y.; his daughter, Lisa Culbert, of Halfmoon, N.Y., his daughter Heather Lettrick; and husband, Charles, of Fairmont, W.V.; and his son, Matthew Carter; and wife, Diana, of Valatie, N.Y.; his stepson, Glenn Davenport, of Saratoga, N.Y;, and his stepdaughter, Amanda; and husband, Brian, of Pine Mountain, Ga. Clay was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.
Visitation, 10 to 11:30 a.m., will be held Monday, November 17, 2025, held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Rd. Watervliet, N.Y. 12189. Services will be private.
