Mr. Clayton Gerome Jones, age 89 of Cana, Virginia passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Jones was born on July 10, 1936 in Carroll County to the late Larkin Isley and Elizabeth Jane Easter Jones.
Mr. Jones proudly served our country in the United States Army. He served in the Hg. 5th Reg. ARADCOM, Fort Sheridan, IL. with a rank of SP4. He received many awards including a Marksman’s Badge (Carbine), Good Conduct Medal, Motor Vehicle Drivers Badge, and Certificate of Achievements. He was a faithful member of Paul’s Creek Church for many years. After retirement, Clayton and Shirley spent many hours hiking, walking the entire New River Trail, the Virginia Creeper Trail, and many trails along the parkway and visited dozens of waterfalls in Virginia and NC. They also visited Alaska and Hawaii in addition to multiple cross country road trips.
Clayton was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Surviving are his wife, Shirley McMillian Jones; sons and daughter-in-law, Brian Jones (Ginger), Brent Jones (Deana); grandchildren, Isaac Jones (Sara), Jana Jones, great-grandchildren, Jack Jones, Carson Jones; sister, and brother-in-law, Marie Jones Edwards and Stanley; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clarence Jones and JoAnn, Marlie Jones, Murphy Jones and Rosa, Larkin “L.J.” Jones and Terry; along with numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by a daughter, Kim Jones; a granddaughter, Erica Jones; a sister, Margaret Jones; and brothers Garnet Jones, Marvin Jones, and Melvin Jones.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Pauls Creek Church with Rev. Justin McCreary, Rev. Tony Holder, and Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Jones-King Cemetery in Cana, Virginia. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 from 12:00 PM ~ 1:30 PM at the church.
