Clem was the first person we met when we moved into the house next door. Actually BEFORE we moved in...we met him on the day we looked at the place, chatting over the hedge that we would later share with him and Jan for 26 years. What a great neighbor. He was always in his back yard chasing down his beloved dogs, first Lillie, then Lillie and Annie, now Annie and Dakota. He also helped us chase down our own dog on the frequent occasions when he escaped due to his owner's inability to keep his gates closed. : ( .
Clem may have even saved my life once when I had an accident with a chain saw. He heard it on his police radio and ran over to apply a tourniquet to my leg until the ambulance arrived. It pays to live next to a fire chief!
Most of all we will remember his curmudgeonly-yet-jovial banter. Like the time we were having beers in the driveway and invited him to join us. "Harumph," he said, "I don't drink anymore." I stared at him in disbelief. He continued, "I don't drink any LESS...." : )
RIP, Clem, you were the best.
