Clifford "Cliff" J. Shanty Charlton - Clifford "Cliff" J. Shanty, 85, of Charlton, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at his residence with his beloved family by his side.
Born in Schenectady on February 1, 1938, he was the son of the late Enos J. and Jennie M. (Myers) Shanty. Cliff was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Wostina school in Rotterdam Junction. Following high school, he went on to proudly serve in the United States Army.
Cliff was most known for his passion for cars. He began working on cars in high school as a teenager making his way to becoming the owner and operator of Cliff's Body Shop in Scotia for 40 years. Cliff prided himself on excellent work, integrity & honesty. He taught anyone willing to learn the trade and treated his employees as family. He was highly respected and a man of ingenuity. He was able to fix anything that was brought to him. If parts were unavailable he fabricated them from scratch. This earned him the nickname "MacGyver" from his family. In his retirement Cliff continued to restore classic and vintage cars in his home shop where he worked daily and hung out with his friends. He also loved to visit Burnt Hills Cafe every chance he could with friends and family. His restorations fulfilled dreams for many, ended up in museums, as well featured in Hemmings Motor News magazine.
Aside from his reputation in the auto body industry, Cliff was known as being a true gentleman that was a well-respected and generous man who would help anyone in need. He was also known for his great storytelling, wittiness and humor that was followed by his contagious laugh. The memories that Cliff held closest to his heart were the ones that he spent camping with his family and friends. He was extremely proud of his wife and his two daughters, Diana, and Tamra.
In addition to his parents, Cliff was predeceased by his grandson, Jason "Jay" Trier, and siblings, Clarence Shanty, Enos Shanty and Alberta Dussault.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Marty Shanty; daughters, Diana Shanty (Mike Parks) and Tamra Trier (Eric); grandchildren, Alexander Tebano, Cody Trier and Josh Trier and sister, Edith Crandall. Cliff is also survived by a host of many nieces, nephews, and good friends. His family would like to give special thanks to his hospice nurse Jenn for her exceptional care and compassion.
