Clifton Lee "Tinker" BROOKS Jr.

“I’m a country boy,” Cliff told me. “I come to the park every day.” And he did, always keeping a vigil from his station at the base of the Bryan statue, rain or shine.

My interest in Monroe Park focuses on a Red-Tailed hawk, a magnificent creature that lives at the top of a poplar tree next to the fountain. Armed with notebook and camera I visit the park whenever possible. The first person I would see when I arrived was Cliff, walking toward me from his statue, pointing his arm in the direction of whichever tree the hawk was perched in at the moment. Cliff knew where the hawk was, what animals he had hunted, and when he caught them. He could spot a bird hiding in a treetop clear across the park. And he knew the history of every statue in the park.

I felt something was wrong when Cliff failed to show up in the park the last few weeks. Today I asked the park people where Cliff was and they told me he died. The weather is beautiful on this November afternoon, sunny and warm. Only a few feet from the statue stands the Red-Tailed hawk, the bird Cliff knew so well, eating a squirrel under the magnolia tree, oblivious to passersby. I have a sense that Cliff is there watching, sitting at the base of the statue, nodding and smiling like he always did, a man at peace with himself and the world. The name on the statue is Joseph Bryan. But it will always be Cliff’s statue to me.

My brothers and I grew up with Tinker. We all went to the same scholl for a while together. My prayers are with the family at this difficult time. My you all find comfort in the lord.

To the Family:

I give my deepest condolences. I have many memories of Tinker as you do. Living next door to you all and him for so many years growing up, it feels like a part of my family has gone also. Keep looking to the Lord for strength. He knew Tinker best and said it is time. We have to bear with his decision.
